Motor Repair ALL WORK GUARANTEED Drivers Reminded Of Stop1 Rules The "dime" on which the aver age car can stop from a speed of 30 miles an hour would have to be 80 feet wide, the secretary of state's traffic safety division points out. The division said too many Ore gon driven are torgettmg there are three separate actions that must take place before a car can i be brought to a stop from any giv en speed, r irst, the driver has to 1 see and recognize the need to stop, j After he does that, there's the half i second or more interval called "re action time" before he moves his foot from the gas pedal, and final ly he applies the brakes. All this time, until the brakes finally stop the car, the driver is moving to ward the thing he doesn't want to hit. This means the average driver can stop an average car on dry level pavement in the following distances: At 20 miles an hour 43 feet (in cluding 22 feet of reaction time). At 50 miles an hour 186 feet (55 feet of reaction time). The faster you go. the longer it takes, safety officials said, be cause a law of nature steps in. The energy packed into an object in motion increases approximately as the square of the increase in speed, which means that the faster you drive, the longer it takes for the brakes to counteract the ene rgy of that speed. Excessive speed was a factor in ninety fatal accidents in Ore gon last year. News-Review classified ads bring results. Phone 100.
