achieved its wish to cross the
100,000 population mark, but it
just barely made it.
Preliminary census figures give
the county a population of 100,349.
That is a 33.47 percent increase
over 10 years ago.

Of Stop1 Rules
The "dime" on which the aver
age car can stop from a speed of
30 miles an hour would have to be
80 feet wide, the secretary of
state's traffic safety division
points out.
The division said too many Ore

ward the thing he doesn't want to
hit.
This means the average driver
can stop an average car on dry
level pavement in the following
distances:
At 20 miles an hour 43 feet (in
cluding 22 feet of reaction time).
At 30 miles an hour SO feet of
reaction time).
At 40 miles an hour 128 feet (44

Who Defied Napoleon

Pius XII Sunday canonized
the fourth new saint of the 1950
holy year and cited him as an
example for churchmen persecuted
by Communism.
The new saint was Vincenzo
Maria Strambi, Italian bishop of
Macerata and Tolentino, who was
exiled after refusing to swear alleg
iance to Napoleon when his dio
cese was occupied in 1807.
"Remember that the church of
God can be attacked but never
can be defeated," said the pontiff
in the ceremonies at St. Peter's
basilica.
Napoleon, he continued, "w h o
dared to think of reducing to his
will priests and bishops and even
the pope, after so many victories
and so many triumphs was com
pletely defeated" and turned to re
ligion for the "supreme comfort."
Accident Kills Eugene Man

A blowout on the mountainous
ridge route highway, which links
this city with Los Angeles, caused
a crash in which Cleo Infield. 69.
lost his life.
Infield's automobile swerved off
the road and struck a tree in the
accident Wednesday night. High
way patrol officers said he was
from Eugene. Ore. His wife. Jo
sephine, was not hurt.

bound car, I.ydia Ann Lovett, 60,
Hannibal, Mo., was injured
