Powell are general chairmen of the show. Mrs. Lloyd Hayes is publicity chairman. No admission will be charged for the show. A picnic was enjoyed in the fir grove shading the Leslie Chapman home in south Yoncalla. Following the picnic Mrs. Fred Merk presented each charter mem ber with a potted flowering cactus plant. Mrs. Jennie Lasswell, who organized the club in 1918, was present. Charter members, Mrs. Annie Kruse, Mrs. Edgar Rich ards and Mrs. Zadie Bishop, were honored. Roll call topic was on the program for the next club year. Attracting much interest and praise was the first copy of the History of Yoncalla Valley, by An nie A. Kruse. WOMAN'S SOCIETY OF CHRISTIAN SERVICE TO MEET ON THURSDAY The Woman's Society of Chris tian Service will meet Thursday at a one o'clock dessert-luncheon at the Methodist church parlors Thursday with members of Circle No. 1, as hostesses. The topic for the day will be "1 Can Give More." The worship will be in charge of Mrs. H. A. Canaday with Miss Live Lewis presenting the pro gram, which will include slides and pictures. All women of the church are invited. DeMOLAYS PRESENT DRILL AT JOB'S DAUGHTERS AFFAIR Roseburg DeMolay members, ac companied by several members of the newly organized Mothers club, went to Elkton Saturday evening to attend the crowning of the queen ceremony. Roseburg DcMolays pre sented their drill and members of the Mothers club served refresh ments. A huge crowd attended the affair. SURPRISE SHOWER HONORS SUTHERLIN WOMAN WHO IS LEAVING FOR CALIFORNIA Mrs. Percie Grove, who is leav ing Sutherlin soon to make her home in California, was honored at a surprise party and handker chief shower last Friday. The af fair was held at the home of Mrs. Bill Staniford on Kruse avenue, west of town. Those present were members of the Christian Women's Fellowship of the Christian church and other friends. i Visiting was enjoyed during the afternoon. SUTHERLIN CHURCH GROUP SURPRISES MRS. WHITFORD ON RECENT BIRTHDAY Mrs. Lloyd Whitford of Sutherlin was honored Sunday night when the Christian Endeavor group of the Sutherlin Christian church plan ned a birthday surprise. The dining table was decorated with a birthday cake and an ar rangement of gifts at the Whitford home. Mrs. Whitford opened her gifts, followed by games. The evening closed with refresh ments. Naval Academy Forced To Reduce Appointments WASII1NGT0N-.V The Navy has decided to cut back the train ing of new officers at the Naval academy, Annapolis, Md. As a result, it will cut from five to tour the number of appointments ?aeh Congress member may make lo the academy. Vice Adm. J. W. Roper, chief of naval personnel, disclosed the decision in a memorandum to all senators and representatives. He said living quarters at the academy are designed for 2,750 midshipmen, but that about 3.400 are now "on board" and the total is expected to reach 3,700 by Oc tober. 1950. Rather than ask "in these times of essential retrenchment" for an estimated $38,000,000 to expand la cilities. Roper continued, "a re duction in the sze of the brigade ol midshipmen is the acceptable alternative." GEORGE EDES Miss Amy Sinnock of San Fran cisco, Calif., arriv-1 here Thurs day to spend a month visiting her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sinnock. This is the first time they have been together in over 30 years. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vian and family left Thursday for a two weeks visit with relatives in Ne braska. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Atkinson and family left Friday for Seattle, Wash., where they will attend the graduation exercises of . their daughter, Loranne, who graduates from the Northwest Bible college of Seattle. Mr. and Mrs. John Weber and family are visiting relatives in Los Angeles for a week. Miss Phyllis Wright, student in San Francisco, spent several days last week visiting her parents. Misses Lawana, Carolyn and Pa tricia Edes of Sandy, Ore., are visiting their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Edes; and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bolin for a month. Mr. and Mrs. Avery Lasswell and two children spent several days last week at their summer home at Neskowin, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. Jean Cullin and son left June 1 for a month's visit with relatives in Nebraska and Illinois. George Edes transacted business in Roseburg Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Curtis and son spent the weekend visit ing Mrs. Curtis' parents near Port land. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Cook and family and Miss Lilian Barrie of San Francisco are visiting at the C. Lee. Lee's foster sisters", Mrs. Chris tine Lee Rieber of Metuchen, N. J and Mrs. Elizabeth Lee Fry, Los Angeles, filed suit yesterday lor shares in the $10,000,000 estate left by Lee, who committed suicide last January. They contend they were legally adopted in 1920 by the late Don Lee, founder of the automobile and radio fortune, and that it was his intention for them to share equally in the estate with his son, Thomas. In a handwritten will, Thomas left the entire estate to an uncle, R. D. Merrill, Seattle, Wash., lumberman. The fourth claimant is Thomas Lee's aunt, Mrs. Nora S. Patee of San Marino, Calif., named his guardian after he was declared mentally incompetent in 1948.
