Price Reductions Decrease Net Income Of Weyerhaeuser Timber Company During 1949 TACOMA, April 13 (AA The Weyerhaeuser Timber company's an nual report for 1949 today listed a net income of $24,633,016, a decline of over $4,000,000 from the 1948 figure. Commenting In the report on the company's sales picture, J. P. Weyerhaeuser, company president, said price reductions made dur ing the year were felt In every division of the firm. "Had it not been for rather sharp Increases in volume, earnings for the year would have been more seri ously curtailed. In l49, consoli dated salea totaled $155,662,755 com pared with 1136,765,538 in the pre vious year." "Our profit margins will prob ably be reduced again in 1950," Weyerhaeuser said. "Adoption of a pension plan for hourly paid em ployes will add further to our costs this year." Vandenbercj Hai Operation For Tumor WASHINGTON. April 13 The condition of Senator Vsnden berg (R-Mich) who underwent a tumor operation Tuesday, today was reported "satisfactory" by his physicians. In a statement issued through the senator's aides, Dr. Robert F. Owen said: "The condition of Senator Van denberg Continues to be saiisiae tory. There are no complications." Preliminary laboratory findings showed no evidence of cancer. Erase Treason Suspicion, Taft's Urge On Truman WASHINGTON, April 13. (JP Senator Taft ,R-Ohio) demanded today that President Truman "eliminate any suspicion of trea son" from the administration "if he can." Taft, chairman of the Senate Re publican policy committee, also ac cused Mr. Truman of libeling Sen ator McCarthy (R-Wia) and of pre judging . McCarthy's charges of Communism in the State depart ment. Taft expressed his views on the Investigation of McCarthy's charges in his weekly column, "Washington report," to Ohio news papers. He sharply criticized Mr. Tru man for declining to give the in quiry committee access to FBI files and other confidential government loyalty records. He also declared: "The pro-Communist influence in the State department has been re flected in a strongly pro-Communist policy in the far eastern divi sion (of the department), and a strongly pro-Communist policy in China which succeeded finally in delivering China and perhaps the entire east to Communism." Then Taft added: "Whether Senator McCarthy has legal evidence, whether he has overstated or understated his case, is of lesser importance. The ques tion Is whether the Communist in fluence in the State department still exists. The bureau estimated February gold production at 172,016 fine ounces compared with 166,811 dur ing January. Output in South Dakota rose four percent to 49,322 ounces, the high est monthly total since 1942. California output increased 11 percent to 37,120 ounces, and Utah one percent to 35,575 ounces. Other gold production totals for February: Washington 7,700 fine ounces; Alaska 2,700: Oregon 520. Silver production during Febru ary totaled 3,202,408 fine ounces compared with 3.181,880 in January, including: Idaho 1,193.000 fine ounces: Wash ington 32,000; Oregon 210; Alaska 331. and conclusively. As far as the Chamber of Com merce is concerned, grumpy resi dents can jolly well stay indoors. A leaflet to be distributed in this resort and convention town says that "without visitors there would be no Atlantic City." and persons who "lack the intelligence or the desire" to realize this "should avoid contact with our visitors." "Never argue with a visitor," the leaflet aays.
