UP) Con gress may be asked soon to In vestigate its own overseas tra velers. Several members of the House disclosed informally that they are preparing legislation to bring this about. A Customs bureau spokesman who would not. permit use of his namt suggested that an inquiry would disclose that some Con gressmen have abused their cus toms exemption privilege in br inging things home from abroad. The projected investigation stems from Congressional de mands that government expens es generally be curbed and that tax loopholes be plugged up. J6 Million Spent House members planning the investigation estimated that the aggregate cost to the tax payers of "junkets by House members alone" in 1949 was $6 million. This Includes the cost of military transportation, food and lodging, entertainment, and personal ser vices. "Every time a load of Con gressmen goes abroad," one member said, "there is a heavy initial bill either for ship trans portation or for transportation by military plane. You must figure in this the cost of the personnel manning the planes and the cost of servicing them. You must figure in the time consumed by our employes abroad arranging for accomodations and entertain ment for the visitors, all of which eventually comes out of the tax payers' pockets."
