Foreign Spending
WASHINGTON. UP) Con
gress may be asked soon to In
vestigate its own overseas tra
velers. Several members of the House
disclosed informally that they are
preparing legislation to bring this
about.
A Customs bureau spokesman
who would not. permit use of his
namt suggested that an inquiry
would disclose that some Con
gressmen have abused their cus
toms exemption privilege in br
inging things home from abroad.
The projected investigation
stems from Congressional de
mands that government expens
es generally be curbed and that
tax loopholes be plugged up.
J6 Million Spent
House members planning the
investigation estimated that the
aggregate cost to the tax payers
of "junkets by House members
alone" in 1949 was $6 million.
This Includes the cost of military
transportation, food and lodging,
entertainment, and personal ser
vices. "Every time a load of Con
gressmen goes abroad," one
member said, "there is a heavy
initial bill either for ship trans
portation or for transportation by
military plane. You must figure
in this the cost of the personnel
manning the planes and the
cost of servicing them. You must
figure in the time consumed by
our employes abroad arranging
for accomodations and entertain
ment for the visitors, all of which
eventually comes out of the tax
payers' pockets."
Outlay Questioned
He said he has been unable to
find justification for the large an
nual outlay.

There has been no estimate of
