Power Development In Area Of Columbia River Topic Of Movie Shown To Kiwanians Power development of the Columbia River, and the vast poten tial supply of unharnessed horsepower were shown in a motion picture, "The Columbia," produced by Bonneville Power Admin istration and exhibited by Loren A. Moore, engineer, at Tuesday's Kiwanis Club meeting. The picture traced the history of the founding of the North west from the time of President Thomas Jefferson and the Lewis and Clark expedition; on through the early 1930 depression days, the coming of transient labor, the dust bowl refugees, and lastly the people brought here by the war. In the Pacific Northwest alone remained the power neces sary to run the industries needed for the war, and soon the entire supply of Bonneville and Grand Coulee Dams, formerly termed "whilte elephants," was turned to war uses; But still ihis power is Insuffi cient, the picture pointed out, and further dams on the tributaries are needed to prevent such floods as that which destroyed Vanport. The great potentials of lumber ing, aluminum and now atomic development aire the industries of the Northwest, which can be further developed with added power, Moore pointed out. Vast acreages of semt-arid lands in Eastern Oregon and Washington can be made productive through irrigation. As yet, the Columbia is but one-tenth developed. 'Thirty million horsepower remains and is obtainable through construc tion of other dams now proposed. Five members of Springfield's newly organized Kiwanis Club, headed by Ferrol lies, formerly of Roseburg and son of Mr. and Mrs. Story lies, visited the club. They brought with them a trav eling gavel, which had been pre sented them by the Eugene club. Others from Springfield were J. C. Cook, Lloyd Ardinger,- Ralph A. F. Walter Kresse, M. D.
