Rt. 2, Roseburg, has been rr -r itly assigned as chief of the aera tions, planning, organization and training division at the Paris headquarters of the American Graves Registration Command. European Area, it was announced here today. He was previously assigned as executive officer of the same division. The American Graves Registra tion Command is charged with the responsibility of directing in the former European area, the United States Army's searching and cemeterial operations, and its present program to return to the homeland those U. S. dead of World War II whose next-of-kin so request. This area includes aDoroximate- ly 1,255,00 square miles, and ex tends irom Ireland to Russia, ana from the Mediterranean Sea to the Arctic Ocean. Thirty-seven temporary U. S. World War II military cemeteries, in which have been interred 147,017 American dead, were established in the area. Maior Springer graduated from the University of Illinois in 1931, where he gained his bachelor of arts degree. Later, in the Army, he completed courses at the U. S. Army Field Artillery School and the U. S. Armv Command and General Staff College.
