The American Graves Registra
tion Command is charged with
the responsibility of directing in
the former European area, the
United States Army's searching
and cemeterial operations, and its
present program to return to the
homeland those U. S. dead of
World War II whose next-of-kin
so request.
This area includes aDoroximate-
ly 1,255,00 square miles, and ex
tends irom Ireland to Russia, ana
from the Mediterranean Sea to
the Arctic Ocean. Thirty-seven
temporary U. S. World War II
military cemeteries, in which have
been interred 147,017 American
dead, were established in the
area.
Maior Springer graduated from
the University of Illinois in 1931,
where he gained his bachelor of
arts degree. Later, in the Army,
he completed courses at the U. S.
Army Field Artillery School and
the U. S. Armv Command and
General Staff College. He served
with the 4th Infantry Division
Artillery as a Field Artillery bat
talion commander and executive
officer during World War II, and
was awarded the Bronze tstar
Medal and the Army Commen
dation Ribbon for meritorious
Service.

officer in the revoluntionary

1920-22 Abandoned soldering

1926 Chiang's armies, a year
after Sun's death, seized the big
Yangtze Valley cities to open a
long campaign against war lords.
1927 Suddenly breaking with
left-wing advisers, Chiang dis
missed his Soviet counselors.
1930 Converted to Christian
Ity and baptized into the Metho
dist faith; unified 20 of China's
28 provinces under his Nanking

1931 Japan shattered world
peace, advancing into China's
northeastern provinces. Said
Chiang, "China is not ready" to
fight; "give me 10 more years."
1934 Completed his nine-yeac
struggle to drive Communists in
to the far northwest provinces.
1936 Sent "Young Marshal"
Chiang Hsuh-Liang to clean up
the last Red stronghold, Shensl
province; but Chang was convert
ed to the Red view "that China
must fight Japan.
Dec. 8, 1936 Chiang flew to
Sian to rebuke the young marshal-
but was himself seized and kept
captive. He was released Christ
mas day, with the question of bat
tling Japan still unresolved.
July 7, 1937 Japan's attack
near Peiping launched the full
scale war. Several limes In the
next few years Japan marie peace
overtures, but "there will be no
peace while a single Japanese sol
dier remains on Chinese soil,"
Chiang proclaimed.
Sept. 13, 1943 Generalissimo
Chiang became president, a post
he has hold ever since.
