NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURS, OREGON, FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 194? THREE Truman's Policy On Farm Prices Confuses Solons By EDWIN B. HAAKINSON WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 .T) Both warring camps in a con gressional battle over govern ment farm-price supports claimed President Truman's backing to day. Chairman Elmer Thomas (D Okla) of the Senate Agriculture Committee, who favors changh.g present farm laws to assure a permanent high level of govern ment price supports, said Mr. Truman's state of the union mes sage "could not be better." Senator Aiken (R-Vt) who as previous agriculture chairman wrote the existing legislation calling for flexible supports, com mented: "The president's mes- sage is very reassuring." Said Thomas: "There is no doubt about it at all 90 per cent of parity will be approved." Said Aiken: "There is no surt-r way to guarantee a bust than 90 per cent of parity." Parity is a computed price on farm products intended to give farmers the same purchasing power they had in a past favor able period. During the war the govern ment assured farmers of price support up to 90 per cent of par ity on most crops. The GOP 80th Congress passed a flexible price support act that would lower price supports if crop surpluses develop. Housewives and consumers have a definite pocketbook inter est in the growing dispute. The level of federal farm price sup ports has a direct bearing on prices of food and other major cost-of-living items. Varying Views Expressed Senators had no monopoly on the confusion over just what Mr. Truman proposed. Rep. Hope (R-Kas), former chairman of the House Agricul ture Committee said: "The ub jectives he states are those that we're all for and not very dif ferent from the ones In the re publican platform." Rep. Pace (D-Calif) said: "I am most pleased that he did not recommend flexible support prices as set out in the Aiken bill which was forced through Congress by republicans in the closing hours of the last regular session." What Mr. Truman said was this: "Our national farm program should be improved not only in the interest of farmers, but for the lasting prosperity of the whole nation. Our goals should be abundant farm production and parity of Income for agricul ture. . . . "Farm price supports are an essential part of our program to achieve these ends. Price sup- ports should he used to prevent farm price declines which are out of line with general demands, and to promote good land use. "Our price support legislation must be adapted to these objec tives." Outside of congress, Albert S. Goss, master of the National Grange which advocates flexible supports interpreted the presi dent's message as endorsing that principle. Safety experts say rubbish, waste paper, and other combus tible materials should be burned In open metal containers on bar ground at a safe distance (50 feer if possible) from buildings and combistible materials Shrews, which are mice-like but net rodents, will die if they go without food even a few hours. It is a low-cost floor, its beauty and color give it the ap pearance of being a higher priced material. Developed originally for use in basement areas where moisture and alkali are always present to some extent and where other types of resilient floorings fade or deteriorate, Armstrong's Asphalt Tile has proved so attractive and practical that It is now used wherever low-cost, colorful floors are desirable. Made of asbestos fibers, mineral pigments, and asphaltic or resinous binders, Armstrong's Asphalt Tile is tough and durarjte. In actual use in homes, stores, and public buildings it has proved its abil ity to withstand the wear of heavy traffic for years. F. & W. FOR SATURDAY, JANUARY 25c N0.2'2CANS. 27c 25c .
