NEWS.REVIEW, ROSEBURG, OREGON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 148 SEVEN Society and CluAi By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER ROSEBURG COUNCIL OF CHURCH WOMEN MEET ON FRIDAY The Roseburg Council ol Church Women met Friday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church with more than 100 women repre senting the various churches of Roseburg and Douglas county in attendance. Mrs. Earl Plummer, ; Mrs. Earl Bleile, Airs. H. E. Hall, and Mrs. Roger Gee were ushers. Mrs. Paul S. Elliott, president, was in charge, i 'w officers were elected and included: M Thom as Coates, president; Mrs. D. G. Swanson, vice-president; Miss Lu ella Cunningham, secretary, and Mrs. R. E. Crawford, treasurer. Mrs. Homer Grow played the organ and accompanied Mrs. A. J; Ellison and Mrs. H. D. Mc Kay, who sang two duets. Mrs. Kenneth W. Knox presented a ' very inspiring devotional serv ice. Rev. W. A. McArthur, pastor of: the First Methodist Church, was the guest speaker and gave a very fine talk o.. his observa tions on his recnt trip to Eu rope. The silver ofiering taken will be used for medical supplies tnd medical aid to needy per ons in Europe. A tea followed with the Presby terian Woman's Society members as hostesses and Mrs. T. B. Gar rison acting as chairman, assist ed by Mrs. E. E. Leas, Mrs. Bur- , dette Leas, Mrs. E. S. Hall and Mrs. Scott Layman Mrs. Morris , H. Roach and Mrs. Maurice J. ' Newland, president of the Wo man's Society, received the guests. Mrs. Paul Elliott and Mrs. W. ' M; Campbell poured. The next meeting will be March 4 at two o'clock at the First Bap tist Church in observance of World Day of Prayer. HORIZON CLUB LANS BENEFIT CARD PARTY FOR NOVEMBER 22nd The Horizon Club met Tues day evening at the home of Na nette Desbiens on Broccoli Lane, at which time plans were com pleted for a benefit card party to be held at eight o'clock the evening of November 12. at Can s Haven. Only 20 tables will be reserved. Reservations for the nartv may be made by calling 1081-L. A Kize will be given at each table. Both contract bridge and pinochle win be in play. A door prize will be given and re freshments will be served. The club members will carry out the Thanksgiv'ng motif in the decor ations, tallvs and prizes. Following the meeting, Nanette served lovely refreshment to Stella Durand, Donna Lee Pinard, Ethel Mae Wilson. The business meet ing was conducted dv tne cnair- man with devotions and a short meditation being given by the pastor of the Roseburg Lutheran Church, the Kev. wims Jinc son. Mrs. Johnson is chairman of the bazaar. The discussion of new business was turned over to Rev Mr. Ericksoi., who spoke on what has been done so lar towtds the organizing of a local congrega tion. This congregation win be Roseburg's church of the Na tional Lutheran Council. The pas tor explained the various pre liminary steps necessary rorsucn organization, the first of Which will be Jie election of a steering committee. This will be done at the morning worship service of November 21st. everyone interest ed is urged to be present at this service. Group singing of hymns was enjoyed and at the close of the meeting lovely refreshments were served by tne hostess. SURPRISE HOUSEWARMING PARTY GIVEN SATURDAY FOR VANCE COX FAMILY Mr. and Mrs. Vance Cox and family were honored at a de lightful surprise housewarmlng party Saturday evening, Oct. 30, when a group of friends called at their attractive new home. The evening was spent in play ing pinochle with Mrs. W. P. Hackney winning high score for the ladies and Mrs. Ed Reece re ceiving low score. High score for the men was won by Ed Reece with Charles Stark receiving low score. A fine'gift was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Cox.
