The Republicans went Into the election Tuesday holding half the 49 governorships ,but the Demo crats captured 20 of the 33 state contests. The Democrats made a net gain of six governorships win ning eight from the Republicans and losing In two states, Utah and Washington. That would make the new line up 30 Democrats and 18 Republi cans except for one election od dity. Democratic Gov. Lester C. Hunt of Wyoming was elected to the Senate. UP) Warren Edwards was elected mayor of Cottage Grove in the heaviest election of this city's history. A total of 1255 of the 1600 registered voters cast their ballots. Among the measures approved was a county-wide garbage dis posal plan. PRINEVILLE, Nov. 5. (P) Prlneville has practically a new city government now. The voters elected a new may or, new treasurer, new recorder, and four new members to the six-man city council. HERMISTON, Nov. 5. UP) Coos Bay is going to be a little bigger now. The town voted to annex Mlnglus Park Heights and High court Park Areas. CANYON CITY, Nov. 5-P) A heavy snowstorm delayed vote counting In Grant County, as the snow fell both in the mountains and the valley. The most surprising result was the election of O. C. Calhoun as sheriff over incumbent I. B. llaz eltlne, who had held the post for 12 years. COR V ALUS, Nov. 5. UP) Benton Countv voters refused by only 95 voles to Im pose a special tax lev for market road improvements. Complete unofficial returns from Tuesday's general election showed the nrnnnsal lost. 4.112 to 4.047. It would have levied $45,000 annually for throe years to oil and surface market roads. THE DALLES, Nov. 5. (.T) This city gave approval to three money-spending measures in the general election. One measure will Increase city employes' salaries by 9.6 per cent and another will Issue $160,000 in bonds to finance a water filtra tion plant, and the third will levy three mills for 10 years to finance sewage disposal. Bayocean Freed Of Damaging Storm TILLAMOOK, Ore., Nov. 5. (JP) Communications with the isolated community of Bayocean were restored today as the third storm of the week subsided along the Oregon coast. The community, lying on the slender Bayocean peninsula be tween Tillamook Bay and the Pa cific, became an island two days ago when (he ocean tore a 200- foot gap through the land spit. A bulldozer pushed up a path from Cape Menrs to the commu nity and automobile traffic to Bayocean was expected to resume late todav. The force of the latest storm to strike the coast passed over last nigiu with little new damage re ported. All along the coast, however, were signs of a fierce battering the worst this section has had in nine years. It was a combin ation of unusually high tides plus giant waves kicked up by storms that mil tne damage. Uncounted small boats were battered and docks wrecked. Logs were tossed onto beach cottages. At high tide water swept into the streets of the city of Taft. Waves even licked over the coast high way, and debris littered the route at a number of points.
