Lo cated on hill west of the city, the twin concrete tanks will hold a total of approximately 650,000 gallons of water and replace a 90.000-galIon wooden tank formerly used. Half the reservoir was completed last winter and Is now roofed with corrugated aluminum sheeting. The 'first half of the tank was used while the old reservoir was removed and the second halt of the new reservoir was dug. McKcnna and Wellt of Inde pendence, Ore., have been the contractors for the reservoir con struction, while Howard E. Rose of Portland is the subcontractor for "blowing" the concrete by means of compressed air on the sloping sides and bottom of the tanks. Better Conoreta Method Rose uses the "Gunlte method, which has been employed for nearly 45 years, he said. A denser concrete mixture is produced than by tne standard way oi mixing and pouring the concrete, he ex- ilalned. The dry ingreoients are lown by compressed air through hose and mixed with water at the nozzle. Originally steam in stead of compressed air was used in tne process. Advantages or mixing concrete this way, Rose said, are that one third to one-half less water is required than In the standard methods and the finished product Is less porous than poured con crete. A "Gunlte" concrete floor need he only three Inches thick, he said, where a poured con crete floor would be six Inches thick. The man who operates the hose must be an expert. For he regu lates the amount of water flow. Ing Into the nozzle from a second WE HAVE THE MATERIALS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE YOUR PLUMBING JOB! Home From California Mrs, Don Albright and daughter. Bon nie Sue, have returned to their home In Roseburg, following two weeks In California visiting rela tives. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Albright's brother and sisterln-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hobart, and daughter, Beverly. RIM ROAD STILL CLOSEO SALEM, Ore., July 21. P) I n rim roan around l rater UM hose, by means of a valve. If the mixture is too wet or too dry, he changes the amount of water. The compressed air tamps the con crete mixture down hard. With out that pressure, the concrete would crumble when dry, Rose said. "Gunlte" has been used exten sively by the U. S. Reclamation Service In constructing Irrigation canals. Rose said. It is also used to fire-proof ateel beams. In the latter process mesh is wrapped around the beams and the blown concrete clings to the steel. Ben B. Irving, consulting en gineer to the City of Drain, said the reservoir has cost approxi mately $20,000. The aluminum roof, supported by 75-foot wood arch trusses, cost S6.5O0 to install. The balance of a $35,000 bond is sue Is being used to complete the reservoir. Dimensions of the two tanks are J18 by 148 feet at the top and 40 by 80 feet at the bottom. Flexibility of use will be provided by the two tanks. Water la brought In from Bear Creek, about five miles wost of the city, by a six-Inch Intake, while dis charge to the city is through an eight-nlrh pipe. City water mains are wooden, Irving said. and the route to the north en trance of the lake will not be opened until the end of July, the K.ate Highway commission said today. It will take that long to remove snow and slides. The earliest historian probably was Herodotus. . The French language grew from the colloquial Latin of Caes ar's legions combined with Cel tic, Germanic and Gallic words.
