Detectives said today the thieves had forced open a side door and punched a large hole in the heavy strong box with a sledge, wrecking bar and chisel. Dr. Paul Calhoun, pastor of the church, told officers this morning that It appeared the burglars were familiar with the interior of the church and that they had known about the special collec tion taken last Sunday for Hood relief at woodland, wash. DuMont i The remains of Ell Abraham 1 DuMont, 29, killed In action July 20, 1944, on Biak Island in the South Pacific, arrived In Rose burg last night, accompanied by , Staff Sgi. August Belmont. The l body was met by members of the American Legion Umpqua Post No. 16 and escorted with military honors to the Roseburg Funeral Home. He was born July 11, 1915, In Grand Ronde, and moved to Glide with his parents when a small child. He was a member of the Roseburg National . Guard and was one of the first to go over seas. He enlisted in 1940 serving In Co. D. 162 Infantry and In the 41st Division, known as the famous Sunset Division. He was a member of the Catholic Church. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Esther LaBonte, Glide; six sis ters; Mrs. Josephine Schloppie, Salem; Mrs. -Pauline Lombay, Boring; Mrs. Marie Schloppie, Glide; Mrs. Rosette Dale, Boring; Mrs. Esther LaBonte, San Pedro, Calif.; Mrs. Betty Daniels, Bor ing; two brothers: Lester and Floyd, both of Glide. Graveside services will be held In the Catholic Cemetery Thurs day, July 22, at 10 a. m., with Father Sebastian Ward officiat ing, and with military honors by the American Legion and Co. Fire Destroys High School at Vancouver VANCOUVER. Wash.. July 21. iJP) A fire destroyed most of Ogden Meadows Hiph School to day, and left tne school board with the problem ot where to edu cate more than 600 students next fall. The fire, of undetermined cause, broke out between 3 and 4 a.m. and swept through 24 class rooms, the cafeteria and kitchen, offices, home economics room, and machine shop. The gymnasium and several rooms In the wick north wing were saved. A few other rooms r-ay be partly salvagable. The building was appraised at $200,800. It was a var-bullt struc ture, and anticipated a fall en rollment of 650 students Includ ing Vanport flood evacuees who have moved here. Jennie Lovena Crowley, 63, mother of Delmer Crowley, Rose burg, died at Cheshire, Ore., July 9, according to information re ceived here. She was born In Ana tone, Wash., Feb. 11, 1885. Sur viving are her husband, Walter L. Crowley, Cheshire; four daugh ters, Mrs. Elsie Starr, Willits, Cel.; Mrs. Maude Bagwell. Oak land, Cal.; Mrs. Martha Collett, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. Pearl Ferguson, Eugene; two sons. Delmer of Roseburg, and James of Junction City. One son. Jack L.
