C) Ship ping sources reported yesterday that Sweden's failuce to follow through on a contemplated 16,-000-ton fruit order, due to com plications of the international financial and economic situation in Europe, has been a setback for Pacific Northwest growers. Shippers said Sweden under took last June to lake 16.000 metric tons of aDDles and Dears from the United Slates approxl- Kidneys pain, lea of pep and energy, getting up night, swelling, puffin under the eyes, headaches and dissmeaa. Three fourths of the apples and all of the pears would have been from Pacific Northwest orchards. But to date Sweden has issued import licenses for only 1,000 tons, with no assurances that this order will be increased. Ivar C. Lundequist,- Swedish vice consul here, said the failure of Sweden to buy as much fruit as planned was simplv due to the shortage of dollars. He rejected the suggestion advanced by ship pers that the Swedish-Russian trade pact might be largely re sponsible, but said he was not prepared to discuss that subject. Shippers had hoped that Swed ish orders would take care of a considerable amount of the small sized apples that normally move into export. Both Britain and France, normally heavy apple buyers, are out of the market because of dollar shortages. The Times said that econo mists, who have studied the situa tion, believe the Swedish-Russian trade pact Is a two-pronged fac tor: That Sweden has had to use available dollars to buy materials for production of manufactured goods for Russia and the pre dominating sales to Russia have made it impossible to replenish the country's dollar supply by sales to the United States or Britain. Nichols, Lynam To Stage Semi-Final Of Mat Program The seml-finallsts on Saturday night's wrestling program at the Roseburg Armory arena are cer tain to steal the show if grappling prowess is given complete con sideration, but from the stand point of colorful and spectator pleasing action, the main-event-era have been given their just billing. Jackie Nichols, the sensational Bostonian who holds the Pacific Coast Junior heavyweight crown, will oppose Joe Lynam, the popu lar and talented Oregonlan, in the three-fall semi-final. There are no classier wrestlers in the business than Nichols and Lynam and they're certain to provide a hang up bout In which there will be plenty of action as well as su perb fundamental grappling. But the match expected to fill the local arena to the rafters will be the Inevitable bloody brawl be tween two of the roughest and toughest characters in the sport Whitey Whittler and Pete Bel castro. Whittler, who hasn't appeared here since he made the mistake of putting on the gloves with Ly nam and suffered a knockout, has never been beaten in a local mat performance. Last week in Eugene he defeated Lynam in. a mixed bout, the Norwecian "prince" as a wrestler; the former Australian wrestling ana Doxing chamnton as a fishier. Belcastro, the "Walloping Wop from Weed,' has never been known to give a poor perform ance, although he seldom em ploys the accepted catch-as-catch-can regulations. He is a great competitor and pecks dynamite in both fists. Whittler will be meeting more than his match In rough-and-tumble wrestling when he tackles the rugged Italian. Owen has also booked a three fall opener, featuring the appear ance of a young newcomer from walla walla, wasn., rrea Mit chell, In a skirmish against Tar zan Zimba (Potvln). Mitchell an ardent angler, was sold on taking the match with the promise of excellent fishing In the Umpqua the day following his bout. Elton Owen anticipates a busy evening as referee for all three matches. He will have his hands full in the headliner. The opening match gets under way promptly at 8:30 P.M. . Miss tola V. Singer, Dynamic Speaker, Versatile Musician Playing Ten Instruments, Including Electric Hawaiian Guitar Parity Formula Needs Revamping, Economist Says While the parity price and In come formulas adopted by con gress over a aecaue ago were Intended to serve as guide Dosts o ntlie road to a fair deal for farm people, says L. R. Breit liaupt, O.S.C. extension agricul tural econmist, many students of such mailers feel that these old sign-posts, based on data and conditions proir to the first World War, need to be overhauled and modernized. Sentiment is growing that any national program to protect farm income against sudden price col lapse should not only safeguard a neven flow of produce from farms to consumers but should also facilitate rather than ham per adjustments in line with changes in demand for the many different farm products. Many proposals are being made for modernizing the parity for mulas and agricultural programs in view of the approaching end of the wartime price support pro gram, Breithaupt points out. The major proposals include the addi tion of hired farm labor wage rates to the prices-paid Index, and modernization of the base period. Some favor greater use of the Income partly plan to give more flexibility to produc tion adjustments and more free dom to marketing operations. Moderniilng Needed If farm wage rates were in cluded in the formula and given an importance of one-fourth of all farm expenses, the current general level of prices for farm products would appear only slight ly above parity instead of 21 per cent above parity. If a recent base period were used such as 1937-1946, such odd figures about parity as beef cattle at 157 per cent and horses at 17 per cent of parity would not appear. Modernization of the base per iod would also provide a higher net farm income base. According to the best available figures, the per capita income of all persons on farms in 1910-1914 from all sources, was perhaps 35 per cent of non-farm income per capita. That compares with perhaps 45 to 50 per cent during the decade ending with 1946 or 1947. When figured on the old 1910-1914 base period, farm income per person In 1946 was 168 pre cent of parity, although the average net Income of persons on farms expressed in dollars was only approximately half of the non-farm average, Brplthaunt explained, BOWLING SCORES INDUSTRIAL LKAOI K Ttxiaa RlflBd.itn Teirn Won Lost SanlUtr Market --...a Jyrra Roseburf 329 .. .....
