Kellcy Post No. 2468, Veterans of Foreign Wars, met at the K. P. hall, Tuesday eve- ning, June 24th in a regular . meeting, Mrs. Florence Cooper, president, presiding. Mrs. Eva Marie Darbyson, Camas Valley Route, was given the obligation as a new member ol the auxiliary. Mrs. Nellie Strecby, 908 E. Lane St., who is Past President ot the Fred Clendenning Auxil iary No. 1440, St. Helens, Oregon, was a visitor for the evening. Mrs. Strecby is transferring to ro the Rosoburg auxiliary as she plans to muke her home here. Mrs. Dorothy Teater, hospital chairman, gave a spendid report ot the hospital work during the past year. An afternoon birthday party will be held for the ex service men at the Roseburg Hos pital on Monday, June 28th and a dance has also been planned for the same evening, both to be sponsored by the Ladies' Auxil iary, Veterans' of Foreign Wars. These parties afford much plea sure for the men. Miss Maurice Holmes gave a very complete report of the ac tivities at the Department En campment at Grants Pass. Dur ing the encampment Mrs. Dor othy Teater was installed as dis trict president and also a hospital chairman. Miss Holmes sang at the memorial services held at the encampment. She Is the de partment songstress and h a 3 been recommended for national songstress for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Plans were made for a rum mage and cooked food sale to be held In the near future to aid the auxiliary in raising funds for the hospital work. Mrs. Cooper has requested that anyone having anything to donate leave articles at her home, 1023 North Jackson street. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, July 8th at 8 P. M. at the K. P. hall. ROSEBURG STUDENTS ATTENDING CONFERENCE GKINNELL, la., June 22- Rob ert Berrie, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Berrie, of 630 East Douglas street and Nancy Radabaugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doun Radabaugh, 720 E. Lane street, Roseburg, Ore., are participating in the first national YM-YWCA conference for high school youth, now in session on the Urinnell college campus, having register ed as youth delegates. Some 1300 teenagers are facing the problems of the day in morning evening forum meetings on such topics as "Is a 'Right' Job Pos sible?", "In Which Minority Are You?", "What Kind of a World Citizen Are You?" supplement ed by evening sings, movies, wor ship, and recreation. Among special features of the six-day session were scheduled a coast to coast (Inhci louiin broadcast (June 24, 4:15 - 4:40 CST) and five other radio pro grams broadcast by lowa sta tions. The YM-YWCA conference is one of eight cultural, religious, end educational conventions to which Crinnell college is playing host (Ruing the months ot June and July. THREE-DAY TOURNAMENT PLANNED FOR COUNTRY CLUB MEMBERS THIS WEEK Men golfers of the Roseburg Country Club ai-e invited to en Joy a 54 hole golf tournament to be enjoyed July 4-5-6 at the club course. Medal play, low gross prizes; low net prizes, long drive prizes and closest to the pin prizes will be awarded winners daily. CALAPOOIA CLUB TO HOLD HOLIDAY PICNIC " All residents of the Calapooia community are cordially invited to enjoy the hourth or Juiy poi luck picnic at the Calapooia Ladies clubhouse. Those attend ing are asked to bring a basket lunch for their own families. Entertainment has been ar ranged for, the occasion. Games will be played and prizes will be awarded. The committee in charge includes: Mrs. Opal Mun son, Mrs. Maude Cole, Mrs. Neva Lamar and Mrs. Agnes Wilcox. A soft drink booth will be main tained throughout the day. ODD FELLOWS AND REBEKAHS DATE JOINT INSTALLATION CEREMONY Philetarlan Lodge, No. 8, I.O.O.F. and Roseburg Rebekah Lodge, No. 41, will hold Joint installation of officers at eight thirty o'clock the evening of July 10 at the Odd Fellows hall. All members are urgeu to attend. Refreshments will be served at the close of the installation cere mony. ROTARY ANNS TO MEET AT LUNCHEON THURSDAY The Rotary Anns will meet Thursday at a twelve o'clock no hostess luncheon at the Rainbow Grill. The new president, Mis. t.dith utt, will be incharge. All Rotary Anns are urged to be present. Highway Zone Trustees View Toketee Project An Inspection trlD of the North Umpoua road to the site of the California-Oregon Power Co.'s power dam project at Toketee Kails was made last week by trustees of the North Umpqua Diamond Lake Highway Improve ment uisirici. Making the trio were Harrv O. Paigeter, Glenn V. Wimborly, George Smith, Sam Shoemaker, V. V. Harpham, and Earl Wiley. The party was accompanied by ivi. ivj. pjeison, supervisor ot the Umpqiia National Forest. The trustees were guests of the California-Oregon Power Co. for lunch at the company s construc tion camp at Toketee Fails. The return trip to Roseburg was via Diamond Lake, Prospect, Ore., Iran, and tiller. Augusta Louise Weber, Melrose Resident, Dies Augusta Louise Weber. 86, resi dent of Melrose, died after a short illnesss yesterday, June 30. To consider what tun be done about the improvement of teach ing, representatives of more than 100 major orgaiiixatiuns, lay and educational, a,e rr..--;ing in July on the campus of M.uml Univer sity, Oxford, O. The conference is sponsored by the National Commission on Teacher Education and Profes sional Standards. This commission already has promoted a campaign to arouse the American people to the crisis in the teaching of our youth. It has worked for a nationwide sal ary standard for fully qualified, professionally trained teachers, of at least $2,400 as a beginning salary with increments for expe rience and further training to a salary level of $5,000 to $6,000. The minimum standard of $2, 400 has already been adopted as the official educational objective in almost half of the states. New Campaign Started During April the commission launched a further campaign, this time, for the selection of teachers. Its purpose is three fold: 1. To encourage outstanding young men and women to choose leaching as a career. 2. To elminiate from teaching and from teacher education those who are. not qualified. Also that "only those high school and college students who, generally speaking, are among the upper one-third in personal ity, ability, character, and schol arship, should enter teacher edu cation or teaching." Trek Impairs Service The forthcoming conference will focus attention upon the quality of teaching and hopes to develop a program for stimulat ing improvement in instruction in American schools. "The most serious effect of the educational crisis "has been the impairment in the quality of in struction received by the children in our schools," ; the ; commission says. In discussing what he terms "the vanishing teacher," Dr. Wil lard E. Givens, executive secre tary of the National Education Association, says that teachers Raving the profession since 1939 have formed "one of the greatest vocational migrations in our na tion's history." "Turnover in the teaching pro fession has been devastating since 1940," he says. "Many thou sands of teaching positions were kept open only by the employ ment of three or four different persons in succession during a single year." Fisherman Wounded in Fight With Competitor . W Two Columbia River, fishermen decided to settle a dispute over fishing rights by battling it out with their boats and the result today was two badly banged-up boats plus a leg wound for one of the participants, Sheriff Paul Kearney said.
