He re fuses to elaborate on that asser tion. ' There the situation rests as this s written. Molotov wants II, NOW. Our Secretary of Stale Mar shall, holding that the cost of feeding the Germans should be the first charge against current German production, suggests In Moscow that the lutrr Potsdam agreement (also more or less of a secret so far as the general pub lic Is concerned) should take precedence over Yalta. A British foreign office "spokes man" says thai Britain "shares the U. S. view" that the Big Three I'ntsiiairi agreement super sedes all other major power agreements with regard to Ger man reparation. By CHARLES V. STANTON The State Legislature has a "hot potato" in the matter of weed infestation at Tahkenitch and Siltcoos lakes in western Douglas County. The issue is being tossed around from one agency to another, as the legislature seeks to avoid a large appropriation from the state's general fund to control the weed, an importation from South America. Yet it is gen erally feared that unless prompt action is taken, all of our beautiful coastal lakes will soon be transformed from su perlative recreational areas and scenic attractions to dismal swamps. A number of years ago a Brazilian aquatic weed was intro duced into Tahkenitch lake to provide food and cover for fish. The weed grows in shallow water and forms dense masses. A small piece broken from the parent plant will take root and start new growth. During the past few years there hatt been considerable : logging in Tahkenitch lake. Dragginf logs through the shal- Wrestling Card Premises Plenty Of Torrid Action Professional wrestling fans aren't certain what to expect at the Rosehurg Armory Saturday night, but Matchmaker Don Owen promises a program packed with color and action. Buck Weaver and HeTb Parks will headline the weekly mat show, but considerable Interest is Oeing shown in the semi final be tween Benny Trudell and Dory Dillard. ' Trudell is the French-Canadian lumberiack who defeated Sailor Hogan Imnressivelv here recently. The bewhiskered villain doesn't know exactlv what to exrjeet from Dillard, but expressed confidence wnen ne heard that the matman once held the Big Nine Confer ence championship. "Those col lege punks don't know the score when it comes to grappling and I'll prove it, and fast, Trudell school where chicken sex Is taught The pamphlets are available In Roseburg from both the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the American Legion Post. The Weaver-Parks skirmish should be packed with dynamite. Parks, a Canadian, was king of the light-heavyweight field before the war and hasn't been able to get his foot In the throne room door since his return to the states. He will go all out against Weaver in an effort to (regain lost prestige. Weaver, the Kentucky hillbilly wnu possesses one ot ine most un w IK must remember that the Yalta agreement I made by Roosevelt. Churchill and Stalin) was wholly secret. The later Potsdam agreement (Truman, Churchill and Slalini was by no means an open covenant openly arrived at. We arc standing now on the hot spot that nearly always develops out of secret agreement!. That is the gist of the contention of hon est newspii)er people that ALL agreements binding the lives and the property of the PEOPI.E of whole nations should be made oi enly, In the presence of reporters. It ISN'T an unreasonable con tentionalthough, of course, It Is Idealistic. and have been transferred from one lake to another. The weed also has been spread by birds. Tahkenitch lake, with its many indentations and exceed ingly long shore line, is free of weed infestation only in deep water. It is almost impossible at low water stage to operate motors on many sections of the lake. Boats must be rowed for long distances through masses of weeds. Just at present the water level is high enough to clear the weeds, and some good fishing is being had at both Tah kenitch and Siltcoos lakes. But soon the recreational values will be greatly diminished. A plan for chemical control has been proposed. A certain chemical sprinkled on the water shuts out sunlight. Without exposure to sunshine the weed dies. But only a small area can be chemically treated at a time without also destroying aquatic life. Furthermore the cost is extremely high. It is estimated that the first cost would exceed $200,000, and it probably would be necessary to continue control efforts for several years, as it would not be possible to secure a com plcte kill in one treatment. The legislature has in turns tossed the problem to the dame Commission, the Fish Commission, State Land Board, the Highway Commission and other agencies, but all. have tossed it right back to the legislature. Leslie M. Scott, state treasurer, recently headed a delcgai tion appointed by the legislature to make an invostigatiori and report. In a letter to D. B. Boono, Ro.se.burg; the state treasurer savs: i , i . tt Th outlook is gloomy for the future of the lakes. Three remedies appear, each of which seems too costly for practical application:. chemicals, dams to raise the water, and ehan- ' nels to lower the water temporarily for exposure treatment. , Neither method wilt eradicate wholly. The control will have ' to be continuous. Appropriations of money will be need ed to fight the weed by any method. As you know, the legis lature is hard pressed for money. I doubt that an appropria tion for that purpose would be successful now. ' In the meantime the legislature has in committee a bill which woujd appropriate $25,000 to be placed in the hands of the Game Commission, to be used for study of weed con trol methods, for use in matching federal funds if game become available, and authorizing cooperation with any other state agencies in studfes, experimentation or eradica tion efforts. Recognized as only an idle gesture toward a task of most vital importance, the legislature has kept the bill buried in committee. In the meantime-, sports groups, headed by the powerful Multnomah Hunters & Anglers Club, the Oregon Wildlife Federation and the Oregon Division lzaak Walton League of America aro exerting pressure for realization of the necessity for emergency protection from the destruction hovering ominously over some of Oregon's choice beauty spots. eluded donation of $100 to the Douglas County Red Cross drive and election of representatives, with other Southern Oregon chap ters.
