FIVE Basketball Game Officials Required To Pass Exams V AH persons officiating i( high Bchool basketball games this year, will be required to pass the State Athletic Association s exam inations, O. J. Monger, official examiner lor jJouglas County, stated today. Emphasizing the importance of the Monday, November 25, basket- oau omciais clinic at the Rose burg High School gymnasium. Monger pointed out that officials will be "flatly turned down" un less they show record of passing the examination, either here or before other official examiners'. Notices have been sent out to all high schools within the county that the basketball -clinic will be held for officials and potential officials Monday evening at 7 o'clock. Monger will be assisted In the clinic by John Newby and mem bers of the Roseburg High School basketball team in demon strating various rule changes In floor play. R.H.S. Workouts For Basketball Positions Start With 50 hoop potentials on hand at workouts this week the largest basketball turnout in the history of Roseburg High School Coach John Newby's Indian forces will vie against seven league opponents this year in the raoe for a state tournament berth. Although squad "cuts" will be made, Newby states his hopefuls look very good in early practice sessions. Returning lettermen from the Indians' team of last year, which wound up in No. 2 place In the league last year, are Benson, center; Harvey, forward; Pope, guard; Piper, guard; Mc Cown, guard, and Beard, for ward. This year's Indian schedule will call for games two and three nights a week, and Newby is stressing conditioning in early workouts. The Eugene Axemen, winners of last year's district title, went on up the ladder to become state champions. Newby reports they have lost only two of their start ers. New opposition in District 6 this vrRr are St. Vary's and El- mira, both having outgrown the "B" league 150-studenf limit. Others on the list are Springfield, Cottage Grove; Junction City, and University High. . . Newby reports the Indians' squad will consist of three teams, varsity, Junior-varsity, and sopfio- mores, an oi wiucn will piay com plete season schedules. j ( Presbyterians Arrange Annual Praise Service The annual Thanksgiving Praise Service, to be sponsored by the Woman's; Society and For- sy the Guild, will be held Sundny evening, November 24, at 7:30 o clocks at tne f irst rTesbytenap Church. Bollman will pre sent motion pictures and give a talk on his experiences in the Philippines, and Mrs. Bollman will talk on the present trend in the PhiliDDines. SDeeial music has been arranged.
