Stephen Phone 97 Schools to Stress National Topics in Education Week General theme for the 26th an nual observance of American Education week, which is being held this year November 10 to 16, will be "Education lor the Atomic Age, Superintendent of Schools Paul S. Elliott, said Tues day. Although no special observ ances are scheduled in the Rose burg schools, Elliott said, the schools will stress the national topics during this week's assem bly programs and on the two school radio programs. These topics are: Practicing Brotherhood, Building World Se curity, Facing New Tasks, De veloping Better Communities, Strengthening Home Life, Invest ing in Education, and Promoting Health and Safety. Also In line with the week's program, Elliott said, the Indian theater, through cooperation of Manager Don Radabaugh, will run a short film on the American Education Week themes. American Education Week is sponsored by the National Educa tion Association, the American Legion, and the U. S. Office of Education, and the National Con gress of Parents and Teachers. There has never been a time in history, education leaders say, when the need for education has been "so evident" as it is today. Atomic discovery has marked a turning point in human affairs. Elliott invited all citizens, par ticularly parents, to visit the city schools this week, In order to aid in understanding how today's youth may be prepared for their Impending responsibilities. The work of the schools is being being brought to the pub lic's attention throughout the Unitel States in schools, churches, and public meetings during this week, with open discussions on education's task. Officers Elected By Kiwanls Club Election of officers was held yesterday at the Roseburg Ki wanis Club's weekly luncheon meeting. A. G. Henninger, sole nominee for the 1947 presidency, will replace Louis J. Fullerton, who will hold over on the new board of directors. The vice presidency wa filled by M. M. Nelson in yesterday's annual elections, and C. M. How ard was elected treasurer. Newly elected directors are James L. Siattery, Dr. Louis A. Dflllard. the Rev. W. A. MacArthur, David J. McCarroll. Ralph L. Ohman, Earl C. Plummer, and Eugene A. Springer. Ore., Nov. 13.---P Sheriff Fred Spence told today of how a county prisoner's tooth ache caused more excitement in tqwn than anything happening here in weeks. The sheriff said 19-ycar-old Wesley Davis at first failed to get sympathy when he moaned of his pains. He set fire to paper in his cell, hlch brought the volunteer firemen on the run. Davis asked them if there was a dentist in the crowd. That finally persuaded the sher iff, who took his young prisoner to n riontist's offtoo. After the tooth was treated, Davis behaved appreciatively until they ap proached the Jail. Then while the sheriff turned briefly to greet a frl"nrl. Pavl riiganpenred, still wearing his handcuffs. He stated that Medford, as well as numerous other teams of the state, have "flatly refused" to play on the Roseburg field be cause of its "quagmire condition, in spite of the turf finish. Newby, who appeared with Johnny Ulrich and Ed Harvey, backfielders of the local eleven, said the only remedy for the con dition, which "no doubt staves off future playoffs on the local field," is the development of a practice turfed field. He said the local playing field Is used by four different teams, the Roseburg High Indians. Sophomore Warriors, Junior High Papooses, and the Knseburg Chiefs, as well as for daily prac tice sessions. It results in a "very poorly condi'ioned" field. Women Voters League Speaker Dated Here A representative of the Oregon League of Women Voters. Dr. Edna Landros. Portland, will speak and give interviews to all interested women voters Thurs day, November 11, from 2 to 5 o'clock in the lobby of the Ump qua Hotel. Chairman of nrtranlfltian of the Oregon League, which is af filiated with the National League of Women Voters, Dr. Landros will outline the organization's purposes and functions to poten tial members fov ihe establish ment of a provisional league in Roseburg. All women voters are urged to attend the meeting.
