UP) Four members of one family perished 16 persons were rescued over ladders and 50 others fled to j Balety when fire roared through a five-story brick apartment house in the thickly populated Bowdoln Square area early today. The dead were Identified by police as Mr. and Mrs. Archie Marotta; their daughter, Phylis, 8, and son, Joseph, 10. Eye-witnesses said that Mrs. Marotta died a heroine attempt ing to rescue her two children after she had once reach a win dow leading to a fire escape. Peter Connors arriv ed today from Pittsburgh and said he would return Chatles Hazlett, 13, on a first degree mur der warrant In connection with the New Year's eve death of the boy's playmate, Michael Gerrlch, 12, whose skeleton was found In a Pittsburgh cellar. The Hazlett boy has been visit ing an aunt here during school vacation. Assistant Detective Chief Now akoskl quoted the Hazlett boy last night as saying that he and "Mike" were playing "holdup man" in tlie kitchen of the Haz lett home, two doors from the Gerricks last New Year's eve, using a .22 caliber rifle belong ing to Hazlett's father. Nowakoski said the Hazlett boy told Buffalo police the gun went off 'some way or other" and a bullet struck young Gerrlch who mumbled "something like I'm dying" and fell to the floor. According to Nowakowski's ac count, the Hazlett boy said he was "scared to death" and had tried to hide the body by dragging It into the cellar and putting it under some crates and baskets. In Pittsburgh, the Gerrich boy's grief-stricken, widowed mother, Mrs. Anna Gerrich, said she had reported her son missing within a few days and that she used part of her meaper income from a pension and a $15 weekly wage as a laundress to take long street ear rides in hopes that she would sight her son on a Pittsburgh street. She has four other children. Truman Birthplace Builds Business LAMAR, Mo.,' Aug. 28. OT) Everett Earp's tired of listening to the city council and chamber of commerce argue about who is going to build a sign pointing out President Truman's birthplace. He is going to put one up him self, r Earp is owner of the five-room white frame cottage where the president was born. "He also is a real estate dealer and has been chief constable here for 16 years. Explaining that histslgn would be six feet high and weight feet wide, Earp said It would be erected "right by that tall pine tree 60 feet high, it is that the Trumans planted the day the president was born. "Of course, I'm having the house fixed up, with paint and a new roof and all. Then I'm put ting up a place on the back of the lot for my real estate office, with a garage and a recreation room built- on. My real estate sign will go out front with the Truman sign, when it's all fin ished." No charge has been made to visitors but Earp disclosed that would be changed. Smoke Bombs Planted on 4 Grants Pass Homes GRANTS PASS, Aug. 2S.-IX) Smoke bombs, composed df a small chemical core wrapped in photographic negatives, and sur rounded by a newspaper wrap ping, were left on the porch or window sill of four Grants Pass homes sometime Sunday evening or early Monday morning, stated Chief of Police Carl M. Dallas, who Is Investigating the case. . Dallas said that the bombs, ob viously of home-made origin, were fortunately discovered be fore much damage occurred, al though some damage to paint was caused. A group of juveniles seen near one of the homes Sunday was be lieved to be responsible for the placing of the smoke-making bombs, said Dallas, who added: 'These could have caused several serious fires and when the parties are apprehended they and their parents will be held responsible for damage done." An unidentified substance, forming the central core of the bombs, burned with a pungent odor. Poland Arrests U. S. Embassy Translator WARSAW, Aug. 28. fThe U. S. embassy said last nlghfthat Polish security police had arrest ed Mrs. Irene Dmochowska of Chicago, an embassy translator, for "questioning" and that thus far embassy officials had been unable to communicate with her, although they have been promis ed permission to do so. Worker Crushed to Death by Shifting Tiles MADRAS, Ore., Aug. 28. UP) William Nelson, division main tenance crew worker on the Ore gon Trunk Railroad, was crushed to death yesterday at Metolius when a pile of tiles shifted and rolled. Another worker leaped to safety as the tiles rolled from a car while the two men stood on the stack.
