Back From Vacation Mr. and Mrs. G. M. lies and the former's father. Story lies, have returned to their homes in Roseburg, fol lowing a couple of weeks vaca tioning at the G. M. lies' summer place on Little River. Grange to Meet Friday Rivers dale Grange will meet Friday night at 8:15 o'clock at the hall. Refreshments will be in charge of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Norris and daughter; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Richardson and two daughters, and Mr. Deadman. Enlists In Navy Maynarl Tal ley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tallev and brother of Dick Tal ley, Roseburg, has enlisted in the U. S. Navy and will leave this week for San Diego, Calif., to start his basic training. His mother, Mrs. Charles Talley. has returned to her home in Rose burg, following several days in Portland visiting her sister, Mrs. Goldie Kincaid. L. A. of B. of R. Hickerson of Roseburg left this morning for Eureka, Calif., to spend a week visiting relatives and friends. Picnic to Be Held Sunday The Knights of Pythias and Pyth ian Sisters merbers and their families are invited to attend a picnic Sunday, August 4, at 1:30 o'clock at Kiwanis Park. Those attending are asked to bring their own table service and basket dinner. Visit In Roseburg Mrs. Edith Russell and daughter, Patty, of Camas Valley and Vernon Risbon of Yoncalla spent Wednesday in Roseburg visiting Mrs. Russell's mother, Mrs. Adah M. Klasey, on North Pine Street. Patty Russell and Vernon Risbon are grand children of Mrs. Klasey. Return to Portland Mr. and Mrs. Jay Beaty have returned to their home in Portland, follow ing a few days in Roseburg visit ing at the Floyd Carter home. They were accompanied to Rose burg by their daughter, Beverly, who is remaining for several weeks to visit her grandparents, the Floyd Carters. Visits In Roseburg Ralph H. Fulmer, former messenger for Western Union in Roseburg, now district sales manager for West ern Union in Oregon, Washing ton, Idaho and Montana, made a business call at the Roseburg of fice and visited his parents and sister, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Fulmer and Miss Roberta Fulmer, at Mel rose this week. n Wheelchair Girl Freed In Slaying Stepfather SPRINGFIELD, 111., Aug. 1. (P) Pretty 19-vear-old Jacqueline Colburn, who has been unable to walk since stricken with rheu matic fever 15 years ago, was free today following an announcement by State's Attorney John W. Cur ren that the fatal stabbing and shooting of her. stepfather was justifiable homicide. Jacqueline was released yesterday to the custody of her mother. Curren said her statement that she shot and stabbed Lawrence Barregarye, 36, Monday night during a family quarrel in which the stepfather knocked her from her wheelchair indicated "a case of self-defense." Barregarve had been arrested in 1940 and again last March on threat to kill charges but the charges were dismissed after family reconciliations. Curren said. A divorce suit by Mrs. Barre garve on cruelty charges re mained pending, he added. Auc. i 1. PV The much publicized goal of 60,- uuu.uuu iods is rapidly neing ap proached, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported to day, and an actual labor shortage is a possibility by fall. In Its monthly review the bank cited census bureau estimates that civilian employment in the first week of June totaled 56, 700,000 persons, highest in the nation's history and an Increase of a million and a half over May. It noted that if the 3,000,000 in the armed forces are Included, the 60,000,000 level is closely approached. Pointing out that industry has not yet attained capacity peace time production, the review added that as hiring in manufacturing, construction and trade continues, shortages of workers may be come definite by fall. It called attention to U. S. Em ployment Service estimates that the eventual demand for workers may be sufficient to absorb the currently unemployed plus the re turning veterans, and necessitate recall of more than half the 4, 000,000 employes who left the la- oor torce alter v-j Day. Teamsters Union Wins Cannery Workers' Vote Bv a vote of 39 to 9, workers in the Roseburg Cannery elected Tuesday to affiliate with Team sters Local 926, A. F. of L. The election, conducted by Claude Calkins of the National Labor Re lations Board, was called to vote on affiliation with the Teamsters Local, or for no union. Although the cannerv currently is employing approximately. 80 workers, Tuesday's crew em ployed only about half that num- ner. nnil tew or the Idle workers reported for the election In which 48 votes were cast. West Coast cannery workers generally are affiliated with the teamsters union, Lester Williams, business agent for the Roseburg Local, reports. Harbor Plywood Corp. Control Changes Hands SEATTLE, Aug. l.-W) Con trol of the $6,500,000 Harbor Ply wood Corporation of Hoquiam, Wash., has been sold by Chicago interests to a group of Pacific Coast and eastern underwriters, company officials announced to day. Earl Lee Kelly, president of the First California Company of San Francisco, becomes chairman of the board of directors. Also elected to the board were Harry S. Grande of Seattle, Jack R. Rehm and Frank Hobl of Ho quiam, and L. T. Murray, presi dent of the West Fork, Wash., Logging Company. The announcement said E. W. Daniels and M. M. Patterson of Hoquiam would remain as presi dent and secretary, and that Harry S. Knox of Aberdeen would continue to serve as director. The corporation, which has Its main plant and i offices at Ho quiam and branches throughout the country, had a 1945 sales volume of more than $7,500,000. Sparkman Has Unofficial Majority in Alabama BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Aug. 1. P The official canvass August 8 of Tuesday's senatorial primary was awaited today to determine if Representative John Spark- man, 46-year-old House majority whip, will be forced into a run off for the seat of the late John H. Bankhead. Sparkman, the ex-tenant farm boy who has served 10 years In the House, Had a 223 majority over his four opponents wnn vir tually complete returns tabu lated unofficially. Sparkman, who worked his way through the university or Ala bama after borrowing $75 on a cotton croo, ran with the endorse ment of the CIO-PAC and other organized labor groups, but this was not a major factor In the campaign.
