Lisle, master regent of Yakima, Wash., Palace of the Princes of Syracuse, accomDanied bv 11 members of the palace, visited Roseburg Saturday eve ning, June 8, in the interest of making preliminary arrange ments for the organization of a palace in Roseburg. Those who accompanied him were: Dave , Lewis, prince regent; Howard Ross, Kay Jones, Duane Crimin, Bob Petheram, James Dobie, Don McGuiness, Gentry Wade, Jim Rhode, Lee Johnson and Ron Murphy. . The party arrived in the city about 6:30 P. M. and were enter tained at a chili feed in the K. P. Hall by members of Aloha Lodge, No. 47, Knights of Pythias. A. M. Kuykendall was chairman of the committee in charge, and was as sisted bv Mrs. Kuykendall, Mrs. George Jackson, John D. Hess, Benj. F. Jones and several other members of the local lodge. After dinner the group ad journed to the chapel of the Douglas Funeral Home, where six local bovs were initiated into the order. These were: Charles Plummer, Gene Henry, Gene Wil kerson, Larry Kvidcra, David Bolsinger and Dale Carlson. These boys will form the nucleus I of a palace which is to be insti tuted in Roseburg in the near fu ture. The Yakima boys and Mr. Lisle returned to their homes Sunday. They plan to come to Eugene in the fall to institute a palace, at which time it is planned that the members of the local palace will also go to Eugene to participate in the work. Chuck Plummer, temporary scribe of the local palace, an nounces an Informal meeting next Wednesday, June 12, at 7:30 P. M., in the office of E. G. High, 101 S. Jackson, to which all mem bers, as well as anv boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who are in terested in learning more of the work, are invited. Present plans call for request ing a charter and forming a lo cal palace as soon as there are 15 or more boys interested in and readv for the work. It is not nec essary for a boy to be related to a member of the Knights of Pvthias to be elipible for mem bership in the Princes of Syracuse. Communists Lead B. C. Strike, Bishop Declares VANCOUVER, B. C, June 13 (JP) Charging that the present strike of 35,000 British Columbia loggers has a communist leader ship, Archbishop W. M. Duke of the Roman Catholic diocese of Vancouver Sunday night said, "The leaders are well-known com munists. Their records here and elsewhere open to investigation have been clearly and plainly . written." He called upon the labor move ment in British Columbia to "stand on its own feet and re move 'reds' from leadership." The bishoo declared he ap proved the "right of labor to strike, but said "Canadian capi tal and labor under 'red' leader ship cannot mix. Communism is a real danger in crmsn Columbia." Dorothea Michel in Service of Air Lines Furlough Payments Bill Receives House Approval WASHINGTON, June 13 P The House Tuesday passed and sent to' the Senate legislation giving past and present enlisted men and women pay for furlough time they did not receive while in service. The legislation sets, as a stand ard, two and one-half days of furlough time each month and permits the accumulation of not more than 120 days for which pavment must be made in cash. Payments are computed at the rate of base pay received at the time of discharge, plus allow ances of not less than 70 cents a day. House Military Commit tee members have estimated ap proximately 15,000,000 service people would receive an average of $250 under the legislation. Personnel alreadv discharged would be paid immediately upon their own certification that they are entitled to payments. The amount they receive would de pend on he amount of accrued furlough time they certify they had at the time of discharge. It ; ".I A new career in the sky has opened for Miss Dorothea Michel, above, of Roseburg, recently grad uated from United Air Lines' stewardess school in Chicago. Miss Michel has been assigned to United's western division. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Michel of Roseburg, and prior to joining United Air Lines she was a member of the WAC for three years. Born in Roseburg, Miss Michel graduated from Coles Valley Grade School in 1935, Roseburg High School in 1939 and attended Oregon State College from 1939 to 1M1. Senators Vote Selves Pay Hike, Pension Plan WASHINGTON, June 13 (JP The Senate passed and sent to the House Tuesday legislation reorganizing congressional ma chinery and boosting members' pay to $15,000 yearly. lhe sweeping measure, ap proved by a 49 to 16 vote, would streamline the legislative system by reducing the number of com mittees and by providing each senator and representative with an administrative assistant. In addition to $5,000 pay boost, members of Congress would be come entitled to pensions if they contributed 6 per cent of their annual pay and served six years in Congress before retiring at the age of 62 or older. Previously, the Senate had re jected, 43 to 22, an attempt to limit congressional pensions to the same rate as provided for civil service workers. Senator Byrd said the bill, as passed, pro vides pensions nearly double those of employes. Wage Boost Won By Tacoma Clerks TACOMA, June 13 P) Mem bers of the Retail Clerks Union (AFL) have accepted a new con tract with deoartment store own ers providing for a $4 a week wage increase, R. L. Clevenger, secretary-treasurer of the union announced. About 1,200 nersons, mostly women, are affected.. The new contract will bring the starting weekly minimum for women to S24 for a 40-hour week. and men to $28. Journeymen, or experienced women, will get 77i cents for those in draperies and other specialized departments. The top scale for men will be $1.15. The union had astted for cn S8 weekly increase. Clevenger said most male employes are already receiving over the weekly mini mum and will not be affected by the wage increases. Other terms or the contract call for a 40-hour week, eliminat ing the provision in the old con tract which stipulated 48 hour weeks during Christmas season and inventory time; two weeks vacation after three years work, and a one per cent increase in commission for appliance sales men. Officers Elected by Eastern Star of Oregon PORTLAND, June 12 OF) Mrs. Lorena McNair, Ashland, has been named worthy matron to head the Oregon Grand Chap ter, Order of Eastern Star. Cecil H. Greene, Portland, was named worthy grand patron, at yesterday's election. They suc ceed Mrs. Hazel Graham, Tilla mook, and Sylvan O, West, Port land. Other officers: Associate grand conductress, Mi's. Edna Throne, St. Helens; grand sentenel, Rex Hartley. Jefferson: associate grand matron. Mrs. Catherine helger. Salem: grand conduc tress Mrs. lima Thum, Cottage Grove. A membership or 28,000 was re ported 1953 new in the past vear. Sawyer Rapids Resort Improved and Enlarged REEDSPORT Latest of many new river resorts on the lower Umpqua is that at Sawyer Rap ids, just 26 miles east of Reeds unit, a place long noted for its big catches of big fish during various seasons of the year. About a year ago, Kenneth C. Wilson, formerly of Malin, Klam ath county, purchased the Sawyer Rapids resort from the Solo mons. Three months ago he took nersnrial charge of the work on imnrovemenls. Six older cabins have been re novated and repaired and six new modern cabins have been built. They are enulpped with gas heat ing and cooking facilities, as well as some refrigeration. New beds and mattresses have also been In stalled. The store ana gas station have oeen renovated and fishinp sup olios, groceries, gas and oil are offered. , The sanitation of English bak eries was specially regulated by law In 18fi3.
