TWEtVE ROSEBUR5 NEW5-REVIEW, ROSEBURG,' OREGON, THURSDAY, JUNE 13. 1945 Columbia Fishermen Strike for Pay Increase ASTORIA, Ore., June 13 P) Some 850 gillnet fishermen af filiated with the Columbia River Fishermen's Protective Union struck Tuesday, protesting the OPA's failure to grunt a 22 per cent Increase In the price of river-caught salmon. The strike came at the opening of the salmon fishing season, after a week's closed period. In dustry spokesmen said it was not likely to be a serious detriment to the fishing industry unless long protracted, because June production of salmon on the river normally is light The union had, voted 7-1 lo strike. Cannery workers belonging to the same union did not strike and will continue to handle ocean caught salmon and bottom fish. They recently obtained wage in creases from salmon packers. Gerhart Hauptmann, Noted Dramatist, Dies BERLIN, June 13 UP) Ger hart Hauptmann, 83, German dra .matist, novelist, poet and Nobel prize winner, died Saturday at his home in Agnetendorf, in the Slleslan mountains, it was an nounced today. Known as the patriarch of Ger man literature, Hauptmann was planning to move soon to Berlin at the invitation of the Soviet military government. Hauptmann visited the United States in 1932. He was received at the city hall in New York and Columbia University conferred an honorary degree on him. International Bank Paper To Be Open to Individuals PORTLAND, Ore., June 12 (Securities of the new Inter national Bank will be sold to indi viduals and private investing firms, J. B. Knupp, a federal re serve board official, told the Na tional Association of Insurance Commissioners here. Investments by insurance com panies would be welcomed, Knapp told the annual commis sioners' convention yesterday, but explained that Insurance laws of many states must be amended to nermlt purchase of the "foreign securities."
