ROSEBURG NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, MARCH I3."I94 FIVE Douglas Officials To Attend Harbor Inquiry, Reedsport County Judge D. N. Busenbark and County Commissioner J. Ross Hutchinson said today they would attend the hearing in Reedsport Thursday to be held by the U. S. district engineer from Portland, to consider harbor improvements at Winchester Bay. A letter from W. G. Benson, attorney for the Port of Umpqua commission, urged the county court to attend the hearing, and to bring representatives from "both the Chamber of Commerce and the Rod and Gun Club, "to testify of the advantages result ing from the proposed harbor improvements in regard to sports fisning and other recreation, in addition to commercial fishing. A channel 100 feet wide and 10 feet deep at mean low water in Winchester Bay, from the docks to the majn ship chan nel in the Umpqua Kiver, and a mooring and turning basin 175 feet by 300 feet wide and 10 feet dee" have been authorized by congress. The hearing was called by the ill. S. engineers to determine the Boticipaled commercial advan tages and location of proposed terminal facilities. In his letter, Benson told the county court that the new U. S. district engineer, Col. O. E. Walsh, ana his staff, none of whom "are familiar with the Umpqua bar or proposed im provements," would attend, "and the necessity of such imorove menls should be fully brought out. SOCE President Talks to Roseburg School Teachers Willing subjects in an experi ment were the teachers of the Roseburg schools who heard Dr. Elmo Stephenson, president of the Southern Oregon College of Education, yesteraay address an all-city faculty meeting in the au ditorium of the Rose school. Dr. Stephenson spoke on the "Psychology of Methods," and to illustrate his lesson, flashed a series, of cards on which were drawn simple designs. The teach ers had only a few seconds to see and to guess the pattern. The lesson merely pointed Dr. Stephenson's theme that for learning to be successful, the pu pil must show readiness and in terest, the lesson must be simple, organized and meaningful. "We as teachers can make youngsters sec certain things, and we can make them see the wrong ' things as well as the right," he said. Dr. Stephenson Is described as a "live wire" educator. He as sumed the presidency of the Southern Oregon College of Edu cation last autumn. Enrollment there has gone up 140 per cent over last vear's figure, he said. "But I won't tell you what It is. Per centages tell a great story!" A few weeks ago, the school had a dance that was "uninue," Dr. Stephenson said. There was a 10-man staff line. "That's history in any kind of a teachers' col lege, he declared. Returned veterans have swell ed the enrollment at the Ashland institution, and housing is the only obstacle to Increasing it still more. When asked about "opposi tion" at Ashland to the establish ment of a veterans' college at the Klamath Falls Marine barracks. Dr. Stephenson said, "It depends on what you mean by 'opposi tion'." "The state is under obligation to provide education to the vet erans after the war" he said, "and right now we are more than filled up. After the emergency is over, however, it may be a dif ferent story." Interment will be in the Oak Creek cemetery. Car Damged by Fire During Welding Job Welding sparks this morning, caused severe damage by fire to a car at the Roseburg Welding Works, Court St. and N. Main. The automobile was owned by Cliff Solomon, Wilbur logger, re ported Frank Kent, half-owner of the welding works. One of Kent's men had been working under neath the car and it was believed sparks ignited fumes from the gas linn. spring , $ .
