Mrs. Carl Heigqivt, the former Janet Harrison of Longvlow, said two men wearing dark overcoats hit her with a heavy object, put a hood over her head and drove her to a root cellar. They intended to hold her then for ranson, file told police, but late yesterday took her downtow n and released her. Treated for shock and a head injury at emergency hospital. Methods of burning slashings with the greatest measure of protection to surrounding timber and without danger to reproduc tion, were discussed In detail. Careful planning by lodging superintendents and Intonsive su pervision by protective agency representatives, in close coopera tion with logging companies was held to lie essential. Several Speakers Heard Ed Schroeder served as chair man and led the group discus sion. W. Fx McCulloch, professor of forestry at Oregon State college, presented silviculture aspects of slash burning and followed with colored slides showing various methods of disposal. . Dwight Phipos, assistant state forester, gave the objectives of slash burning from a protection viewpoint. Ed Schroeder, conservation as sistant, reminded operators of re sponsibility under the conserva tion act, as it relates to burning. Lee Harter, inspector for the state forester, spoke on long term Dlanning by the operator and of the moral obligation of the or erator to succeeding geenrations of loggers and citizens. Fred L. Southwick, district warden, outlined the technical end of slash burning. Eugene Peterson, district ranger of the O. and C. -administration, related policies of his de--artment concerning slash dis posal. Rav B. Hampton, fire chief of the Umpqua National forest told of innovations being used by the fcrest service in slash burning. Jess Adkins, loeging superin tendent of the A. K. Wilson Tim ber company, and Jim Combs of Smith Wood Products company, spoke ,on lone term planning of forest practices. All of the settlements were ef fected with a restoration of can celled contracts and the substitu tion of a new clause on union membership maintenance.
