Tbey spent a month at their for mer home in Astoiia and then enjoyed a vacation trip through British Columbia, Washington and Idaho. Visiting Here Mrs. Grant Moore of San Francisco Is spend ing a few days at the Umpqua hotel while visiting friends in Roseburg. He is a member of the exec utive board. Mr. Conn is man ager of the Oregon Turkey Growers association with head quarters in Ros?burg. He plans to be gone about two weeks. Purchase Home Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Bonnem have purchased a home at 950 Hamilton street in J4oseburg. Mr. Bonnem, form erly service manager for the Ash ly Chevrolet company in Klam ath Falls, accepted a position as service manager for the Hansen Chevrolet company here Septem ber 10. He has been with Chev rolet concern for the last 14 years. The Bonnems' daughter, Jeanne, is a student at the Rose burg Junior High school. Sergeant R. H. Wolford's Return Eagerly Awaited CAMP TING HAO, KUNMING. China Master Sergeant R. H. Wolford. 28. husband of Mrs. R. II. Wolford, Portland, Oregon, and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wolford, Rt. No. 1, Roseburg, Oregon, has Just arrived at this station for redeployment. Sgt. Wolford arrived in India, June 1. 1944, and was flown with his unit, the- 35th Photo Recon naissance squadron, over the dan gerous "hump" into the China theater. , The 3oth squadron performed meritoriously its task of aerial reconnaissance, and there is no doubt that the duration of the conflict in China was shortened considerably because of their ef- lorts. Sgt. Wolford. last assigned in Chanyl, China, is eagerly looking forward to his return to Port land, and seeing again his family and many friends there. Timber in Willamette National Forest Sold EUGENE. Ore., Oct. 1. UP). Sale of 42 million board feet of timber was anounced here by J. R. Bruckart, supervisor of the Willamette National forest. Giustina Lumber company bougnt 13 million left in the Mc- Kenzle Bridge area at a price of $3.60 a thousand for Douglas fir and $1.30 for hemlock. The Fall Creek Lumber company pur chased 17 million feet 35 miles cast of Eugene at $6.60 a thou sand for Douglas fir, $2.25 for cedar and $2.20 for hemlock. Rhode Island Governor Gets Justice Dept. Post WASHINGTON. Oct. l.UP)- President Truman has appointed Gov. J. Howard McGrath of Rhode Island as solicitor general of the Justice deoartment. He succeeds Charles Fahy, who re signed. A former U. DDT Effective On Yefch Weevil OREGON STATE COLLEGE, Corvallis, Sept. 27 The hairy vetch weevil, or bruchid as it is more properly tailed, can be controlled satisfactorily by the use of 3 per cent DDT dust at the rate of 25 pounds per acre, according .to a joint announce ment just made by the Federal Bureau of Entomology and plant quarantine and the agricultural cxDoriment station here. This first preliminary an nouncement was made in the form of a letter from Robert P.eider, extension entomologist, to all western Oregon county agents notifying them in advance of the fall planting dates that satisfac tory control has been achieved. Reider reports that the appli cation, to be effective, must be made iust as the first pods ap pear. Thorough application tinder favorable conditions and at the correct time are essential to con trol. A more detailed report on control procedure is promised. Mrs. Lilly Vance is quite ill and is a patient at Myrtle Point hos pital. , Mr. and Mrs. Tom Godfrey were attending to business mat ters in Roseburg the first of the week. Slaughter Quota's End Affects Beef Payments Beef production pavmcnts to Douglas County producers will not be affected hv the iwit re moval of slaughter ouo'is on slaughterers, accordin" to Iw Sbarks chairman of the eoun" AAA committee. Payments win continue to be made on Minhlc cattle, the same as since the pro gram bgan last May. The only change, Mr. Sparks explained, is that the program now includes all slaughterers. Be fore it was necessary for the cat tle to be sold to a "legally au thorized slaughterer." Under the new plan, there may be cases where It is difficult to verify the name of the slaught rer. It still is necessary for pro ducers and feeders to present evi dence that the cattle are eligible for the payment. The require ments are that the cattle were owned and fed for not less than 30 days before thev were sold for slaughter, that they weighed at least 800 pounds and brought at least $14.95 a hundred, and that they were delivered to a slaughterer for slaughter within 29 days of the date of sale. Umpqua Divers Revive Legend of Lost Safe REEDSPORT Surveyors and deep sea divert working In the Umpoua river In the vicinity of Murphy's cabins last week, gave rise to the story that they were In search of a large store safe said to have been wasned Into the Umpqua In 162, when a river freshet undermined the Scottsburg general store and dumped the building and con tent Into the river. Legend I states that the safe contained many pounds of gold dust as well as valuable papers and county records. A long time rumor has 11 that a local riverman located, or at least thought that he had located the long lost safe a few years ago and had proposed to county officials that they ap propriate $2,000 f-ir its recovery; but the county coin ! was cool to the proiwsiiiun. . "I went through the strenuous exercise as required although 1 suffered at the time from a mus cular rupture, the after effect of childbirth," the moiherly, Eng lish-born one-time ocauty contest winner told John C. Gramling, master in chancery w ho is hear ing the 77-year-old MacFadden's divorce action. Describing MaeFadden as ec centric" on the subiect of exer cise and fresh air, she declared he several times endangered their children health by his demands.
