Newspaper Page TextSociety and Clubs By CLEONE INSCHO ANDRUS PHILIPPINES VETS CELEBRATE FOURTH The Fourth of July holiday was pleasantly observed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Starmir on Winchester street when members ot Geoi Re Starmer camp and aux iliary, United Spanish War vet erans, gathered on the lawn for their annual picnic. The grounds were prettily dee orated with flags artistically ar ranged among the trees. Despite food shortages and ration points, a delectable picnic dinner was en joyed at the noon hour, each member having contributed one or more courses. The afternoon was Riven over to relaxation and visiting in the cool shade of the trees. Those en joying the affair were: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beels, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Shugart,- Mr. and Mrs. William A. CFC VOUNG PEOPLE ENJOY PICNIC SATURDAY SUTHERL1N The youn" nco- pie of the CFC group of the Chris tian churcn enjoyed a picnic ana wiener roast at the Fair Oaks picnic grounds Saturday evening. Swimming was enjoyed before dinner and later horse shoes and soccer were played after which the group gatiiered around the campfire and sang. They plan to have picnics often. YONCALLA CLUB HAS BEAUTIFICATION DRIVE YONCALLA At a special meeting of the Yoncalla Women's Study club held recently, it was decided the club would sponsor a drive to obtain funds for the beautification of the lot on Main street recently purchased bv the city council from Frank Helliwcll. The lot will be used as a site for the service men's honor roll and a public park. The lot will be filled in, drained and suitable shrubbery will be planted. Benches will be scattered on the grounds for the convenience of the public. The following commit tee was appointed by the club president, Mrs. Dare Kinge;v, to solicit funds: Mrs. Bernice Merk, chairman, Mrs. Annie Kruse ar.d Mrs Bernice Midike. Any cie wishing to donate to this nroject has been asked to contact any of these ladies. MAR MARTHA CLUB MEETS ON FRIDAY SUTHERLIN The Marv Martha club of the Christian church met in the parlors of the church Friday afternoon with Mrs. Arthur Longbrake presiding. Mrs. Milo Pope had charge of the devotionals. All business was ttansacted and placed on file. After the business meeting was closed the members sewed and visited. Those enjoying the afternoon were: Mrs. Vein Holgate, Mrs. Henry Cook, Mrs. Harry Barker, Mrs. Sarepta Saucerman, Miss Marie Shelbourne, Mrs. Arthur Longbrake, Mrs. Lawrence Long brake, Mrs. Milo Pope, Mrs. New ell Morgan, Mrs. W. P. Graham, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Leta young. HAYHURST GRANGE HAS PICNIC SUNDAY YONCALLA The Hayhurst grange held a community picnic at the grange hall Sunday. A pot- luck fried chicken dinner was enjoyed at noon. During the afternoon games were played and suitable prizes given to the win ners. The prize bull call, won by the grange during the 6th war loan campaign, was much in evi dence, during the day. A large crowd of grangers from other granges as well as friends were present. He is expected to arrive in Rose burg soon. Registrar Ruling Issued by Meuner For Multnomah SALEM, Ore., July 6. (AP) The Multonomah county election registrar, . whose office was cre ated by the 1945 legislature, docs not assume the election duties of the Multnomah county commis sioners or of the precinct election officials. Attorney General Neu ner ruled today. Neuncr pointed out that the 1945 law provides that the regis trar shall take over the election duties of the county clerk, super visor of elections and the sheriff, but that the law failed to mention the commissioners, who also per form some election duties. The registrar is not under civil service. Neuncr held, since no provision was made in the 1945 law, and since it was enacted after a law providing that ap pointment of officials in Multno mah county must be made from the civil service registrar. The registrar bill was the sub iect of a bitter democratic attack in the legislature, and the Multno mah county democratic organiza tion failed by only a few signa tures to have it referred to the people. The game will start at 2 p. m. The visiting lean is the defending champion, from last year's Eugene league and is leading the league again this year. The Roseburg club will be com posed of lodgemcn and provide an All-Star combination. Ellison or Vang will start on the mound for Roseburg, with either Baughman or Willencr be hind the bat. L Dunn Again Roseburg Resident Dr. R. L. Dunn, chiropractor, who recently sold his Roseburg practice to devote his time to his farm at Oakland, reports that lie has disposed of his farm proper ty and has bought a residence in Roseburg. He plans, he reports, to again engage In practice at Kose burg but will specialize rather than do general work. His 70-acre farm, located at the highway bridge in Oakland, was divided, a 16-acre section being sold to Glenn Heaton, and the balance to Bert Hill, both Oak land residents. Dr. Dunn has pur chased residence property at 110 Parrott St., Roseburg, from Ag ness Smith. He is now engaged in conduct ing his former offices in the Douglas hotel building while Di. A. E. Cordell Hull Recovers, Able to Leave Hospital WASHINGTON, July 6. (AP) Former Secretary of State Cor dell Hull was discharged today from the U. S. naval hospital at nearby Bcthesda, Md., where he had been a patient since last October. Physicians attending the 73-year-old former secretary said that hospitalization was no longer neressary in view of his "most satisfactory recovery." (AP) Unless several hundred more berry pickers show up, thousands of pounds of cane berries will be ruined in this area's fields, the farm labor office declared today.
