Petriquin, who is employed in the office of the Douglas county clerk, is taking a two weeks va cation at her home in Melrose. On Leave Ed Moran, radio man first class, was in Roseburg on leave last week visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Mor an. He is stationed at Shoemaker, Calif. Returns from Visit Mrs. Roy Buell of Lookingglass recently re turned from a visit with her son, Staff Sergeant Leonard Buell, at Walla Walla, where he is in a hospital. Sgt. Buell has been with the 41st division for three years. Back To Work T. W. Thorrm son has returned to his work with the Roseburg city police depart ment, following his recovery from a serious operation perform ed in Portland several weeks ago. Leaves For University Miss Mary Lucille Ploss. daughter of Mr. and Mrs Paul Ploss, who re side near Melrose, nas resigned her position in the Douglas coun ty clerk's office, and left Tuesday for Eugene to resume her studies at University of. Oregon where she is a sophomore. Back From Portland Mr. and Mrs. Bill Miller have returned to Roseburg, followine several ciavs visiting in Portland. Mr. Miller expects to leave this week for San Francisco to report for duty in the merchant marines. He is a son of James Miller, who resides on North Jackson street. Morris of Alaskan Service Roseburg Visitor Technical Sergeant Velmonte Morris, former resident of Rose burg, visited briefly in the eity Tuesday. A resident taf- Alaska for the past 11 years, he has been stationed In the Aleutian islands since entering military service land has been serving In the crew ui a crash boat, engaged in res cuing fliers of the 11th air force lollowing forced landings at sea. Morris recently had a thrilling experience while engaged in fer rying a new boat from a Califor nia port to heat tie. The boat, held back by storms, ran out of fuel off Cape Blanco. Because of damage to navigational instru ments and travelling in dense log, the position of the craft was misjudged and it was believed by the officers to be off Coos Bay. Penney company store In Roseburg, today reported an en larged staff to care for increas ing volume of business. Arthur Shore, recently dis charged from inllitury service, has arrived from Anaheim, Calif. Mr. Shore is an experienced men's clothing sulesmun and had Penney training prior lo enter ing military service. He and his wife have established their resi dence at 515 Fowler St. They are members of the Church of Christ. Applewhite, Roseburg, is reported to be slightly improved at Mercy hospital, where she. has been a patient receiving medical treatment for the last 10 days. Her condition, however, is. still re ported to be serious and no vis itors are as yet allowed. Open Business Mr. and Mrs. J. VV. Reed, newcomers to Doug las county from Los Angeles, have opened the Canyonville Ar cade, dining and dancing, on the Pacific highway south of Rose bure. Thev reDort that thev are greatly impressed by the Oregon country and are glad to make their permanent home here. Woman's Society To Meet The Woman's Society of the First Presbyterian church will meet Thursday at 2 o'clock at the church parlors. All ladies of the church are invited. Dr. Morris E. Roach will be a speaker on the program and Mrs. Earl Plum mer will act as chairman of the tea. Mrs. O. S. Chambers, presi dent, will conduct the meeting. Leave For North Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Purchase Home Mr. and Msr. J. A. Harding, of the Hotel Umpqua, have purchased the residence on East Lane street owned by Mrs. Irving Doucette. Teachers' Research Head Slates Visit in Douglas Dr. Ray Hawk, director of re search for the "Oregon State Teachers association, is to arrive in Douglas county Friday, Sept. 15. for conferences with educa tional leaders. Jail Term Given Driver Of Non-Licensed Vehicle John C. L. Colman, 22, of Ok lahoma, was sentenced in the Roseburg justice court today to 10 days in the county jail after pleading guilty of operating a motor vehicle without a license. Judge Thomas C. Hartfiel re ported. Following arrest by the state police, his case was referred to the OPA for investigation, as he was carrying a miscellaneous assortment of gasoline ration tickets, Judge Hartfiel said.
