The afternoon was spent in sewing for the Red Cross. A box social, which was held last month, netted $28.00. This money is to be used for Im proving the hall. SURPRISE PARTY GIVEN MRS. VIOLET HANNON ' ' FRIDAY AFTERNOON , A surprise party was given for Mrs. Violet Hannon, Friday after noon at the home nursing rooms in the Pacific building. The Red Cross staff assistants, of whom Mrs. Hannon is in charge, honor ed her with the party and pre sented her with a lovely corsage. Refreshments were served on a delightful lace-covered table cloth which was decorated with frag rant sweetpeas and matching can dles. Mrs. E. A. The young couple will make their home in Roseburg, where the bride is employed by the Pa cific Telephone and Telegraph company and the bridegroom is employed by the Lockwood Mo tors. SOUTH DEER CREEK' ; GRANGE HAS MEETING ON SATURDAY EVENING South Deer Creek grange met at the hall Saturday night. Before the business meeting was held the hall was thoroughly cleaned and the grounds surrounding the hall were cleaned so that all fire haz ard would be removed. Mr. and Mrs. Samson were initiated and welcomed as new members. It was decided to hold a social meet ing for the month of August. In response to an Invitation extend ed by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Colli son it was voted to meet at their home August 5 at 8 o'clock sharp PtIuck sur and sclal evening, An Interesting talk was given by W. A. Karcher on side-lights of events of the session of the Oregon State grange which he attended as a representative of the South Deer Creek grange. Following the business meet ing, refreshments were served by the H. E. committee and visiting was enjoyed. THE ROSEBURG ART ' AND EMBROIDERY CLUB HOLDS MEETING , The Roseburg Art and Embroi dery club met at the home of Mrs. J. J. Houser Wednesday aft ernoon. The afternoon was spent visiting and sewing and later lovelv refreshments were served by Mrs. Houser, assisted by Mrs. Cluck. Decorations of the meet ing were fragrant sweetpeas, lil ies, carnations and fuchsias. The following ladies were present: Mrs. George Cluck, Mrs. Lucia Ingels, Mrs. E. Rhoads, Mrs. Earl Decker, Mrs. C. W. Lawson, Mrs. A. Neal, Mrs. J. G. Stephenson, Mrs. H. F. Snyder, and the host ess, Mrs. Houser. The next meet ing will be held at the home of Mrs. F. J. Cornell. Knight and Mr. and Mrs. Porter. DINNER PARTY ENJOYED AT GEORGE F. BELLOWS HOME IN INDIANA Of Interest here Is the dinner party given bv Mr. and Mrs. George F. Bellows at their home In Gary. Indiana, recently and at tended bv Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bel lows of Roseburg, their son, Lt. Pobert Bellows and Mr. and Mrs. Cllne of Corvallls and their son, Lt. Cllne. The affair honored the two fnthers, Mr. Cline and Roy Bel lows and was also a birthday din ner honoring Lt. Bellows. A beau tiful birthday cake was cut In honor of the occasion and a plea sant social time was held. Mr. and Mrs. Cllne and Mr. and Mrs. Bellows went to Chi cago to meet their respective sons to be with them a few days before the latter two were sent overseas for army duty. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bellows returned to their home in Roseburg last week and the Clines returned to Cor vallls. . George F. (Fred) Bellovs is well known In Roseburg, having heen graduated from Roseburg high school. He is a nephew of Rov Bellows and the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Bellows of this city. . LADY ELKS ANNUAL SUMMER TEA IS CHARMING AFFAIR OF FRIDAY NIGHT The Lady Elks sponsored their annual summer bridge tea Fri day evening at the temple, with Mrs. . Paul Geddes .. as general chairman of the successful and enjoyable event. Gorgeous bouquets of mixed SDrlnp flowers warA nrttctlnallv arranged by Mrs. L. L. Wimberly ana Mrs; Adrian usher. The tea table, covered by an attractive lace cloth, was especially beauti ful with a flower arrangement centerDiece of pastel-colored sum mer flowers and tall lighted ta pers. Mrs. Wimberly, president of the Lady Elks, and Mrs. Fisher poured. Following the card play, lovely refreshments were served. Mrs. L. E. McClintock won the high score prize for ladies at bridge with Mrs. Maurice L. Hallmark winning the second high score and Harry S. Black winning the men's high score prize. The pi nochle high score prizes were won by Mrs. Al Collins and Val Strong and the five-hundred high score prize was won by Mrs. Da vid Meyers. FOURTH OF JULY PICNIC IS ENJOYABLE AFFAIR AT AUTO PARK Members of George Starmer camp and auxiliary to United Spanish War Veterans and their families enloyed a delightful Fourth, of July picnic Tuesday noon at the Roseburg Auto Park at the Deer creek bridge. Covers were placed for thirty-one. Ice cream, lemonade and coffee were furnished by the camp and aux iliary. The table was decorated by an arrangement of gorgeous lilies, grown by O. L. Lehne of Suther lin. Mr. Lehne is well-known for his very beautiful flowers and shrubs, as he has one of the fin est gardens in Douglas county. Games were played and a base ball game was held. Plans were made for a group of camp and auxiliary members to attend the state convention to be held July 9-12. Supper was served in the early evening. Both the camp and auxiliary will adjourn meetings for the re mainder of the summer. MR. AND MRS. CALDWELL HONORED WITH DINNER SATURDAY EVENING , Mr. and Mrs. Glen Caldwell ofl Seattle, Wash., who have been! vacationing here for the past ten' days at the home of the latter's parents, were honored at a de lightful out-door . 'buffet dinner, given by Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Marsters, on Saturday evening, July 1, at their beautiful home, "Friendciiff," on 3. Kane street. Guests enjoying the occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hamp ton, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Geddes, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Grow, Mrs. Robert Irvine, and Mr nnH iWr M. M. Nelson.
