CAMPBELL The Woman's Society of the First Presbyterian church enter tained at a charming Mothers day program and tea in honor of Mrs. W. M. Campbell Thursday afternoon at the church parlors. Mrs. Campbell, who is now presi dent of the Presbyterial of South west Oregon, Is a past president of the Woman's society and is program chairman this year. Mrs. Earl Plummer was hostess chairman, assisted by Mrs. Mau rice J. Newland, Mrs. Paul Hel weg and Mrs. John E. Runyan. The lace-covered tea table, was centered with a low bowl of lavender and yellow flowers with matching tapers in crystal candel labra. Beautiful silver tea scrv- , ices completed the table appoint ments. Mrs. Runyan had charge of the flower artangements and Mrs. O. S. Chambers and Mrs. J. Roland Parker poured. Baskets of beautiful mixed spring flowers were used about the rooms. Group singing was enjoyed ac companied by Mrs. Morris H. Roach and followed by a play, "The Age Old Dream," in charge of Mrs. Alva Laws with the fol lowing cast: motherhood, Mrs. Pearl Plummer; womanhood, Mrs. Harold Bellows; girlhood, . Mrs. Basil Ryles; weaver of dreams, Mrs. Mary Eastman; . teaching motherhood, Mrs. Paul , Helwcg; nursing motherhood, Mrs. Ivan Pickens and primitive motherhood, Mrs. Edward G. Kohlhagen, with musical arrange ments by Mrs. Roach. The play was very beautiful and exception ally well presented. Members and guests present were most appre ciative for the efforts of the com mittee and those presenting the charming program. Mrs. O. S. Chambers, president, conducted the meeting and com mittee reports were given by Mrs. J. Roland Parker, Mrs. Armour Murdock, Mrs. Morris H. Roach and Mrs. Ida Bailey. Dr. Roach stressed the Mothers day service at the church May 14 and announced the young peoples meeting at Flrpoint for June 2ti to July 3. He also announced the daily vacation Bible school will be postponed until the last 01 July, Mrs. Roach reported that the Boclety would lake up the study of the book of Ephcsians in the sn r tual life study this year. A beautiful gift was presented from the society to Mrs. Camp bell, An original poem, written by Mrs. Effio Schwarz, talented member of the group, honoring Mrs. Campbell, was read by Mrs J. MEET TUESDAY EVENING The teachers and officers of the Presbyterian Sunday school met at the home of Mr. and Mis. W. G. Blake Tuesday evening. New Service Laundry & Dry Cleaners CALL 88 PROGRESSIVE DINNER IS CHARMING AFFAIR OF SATURDAY EVENING A delightful progressive dinner was given Saturday evening by( the Grade Teachers association of the Roscburg schools honoring Superintendent and Mrs. W. M. Campbell. At 6:30 o'clock, the group gath ered at the home of Miss Ina Farnsworth for cocktails. The table was beautiful with a center piece ot pink sweetpcas and fern. Bowls of yellow and pink tulips were placed about the rooms. Next they went to Miss Elnor Sherk's home, where the salad was served. Here the table and rooms held lovely bouquets of purple Iris and bright tulips. The main course of the dinner was served at the home of Miss Vera Fredrickson, where the guests were sealed at two long tables centered with lavender lupin and pink and yellow tulips with matching color-bouquets about the rooms. Dessert was served at the home of Miss Verlie Tracy. Beautiful blue and lavender iris were used In the flower arrangements ac cented by rich red peonies. U. were made at an interesting meeting Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Charles A. Ed wards, 124 South Kane street. The devotions were presented by Mrs. Lillian Davis and Mrs. Annie L. Russel, president, con ducted the business meeting and appointed the committees for the fall tea. TENMILE RED CROSS CLUB MEETS AT COATS HOME ON WEDNESDAY The Tenmile Red Cross club met Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Walter Coats and a very beautiful knitted afghan was completed and made ready to turn over to the Red Cross. The club quilt was sold and went to Mrs. J. C. Flors. Pro ceeds of the quilt will be used to purchase yarn to knit another afghan. Mary Ann Cabot, age seven, knitted a number of blocks for the afghan, which were greatly appreciated by the club. A large number of ladies in the commu nity are making the blocks for the afghans. The next regular meeting will be held at the Tenmile church, Tuesday, May 23, at which time Miss Mary Maw, Douglas county home demonstration agent, will talk on "preparing food for lock ers. NAVY MOTHERS CLUB HOLDS MEETING AT TEMPLE WEDNESDAY Plans for the cooked food sale for May 13 at Carslens furniture store were made at the meeting of the Navy Mothers club Wed nesday evening at the Elks tem ple with the commander, Mrs. Grogg, presiding. Eighteen afghans were on dis play, which brings the total to thirty-five of completed ones to be sent to the navy hospitals at Bremerton and Seattle. Following the meeting, the of ficers served lovely refreshments and a pleasant social hour ,was enjoyed. : The club will hold its next meeting at the temple the eve ning of May 24. Mothers, wives and sisters of men in the na vy, coast guard and'marlnes'and mothers and sisters of women in the navy are cordially invited to join the group. Thirty members were present at this week's session and four new members were welcomed In to the club. MRS. New York City, with the rating of seaman, second class. Aliss Roland is a graduate of the Roseburg seniur high school and was employed with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph as tele phone operator prior lo her en listment. HAS INTERESTING PROGRAM AND MEETING THURSDAY Mrs. A. J. Geddes, president, conducted the regular meeting of the W. S. of C. S. of the Aleth odist church Thursday at the church parlors with Mi's. R. A. Feenstra as program leader on the topic "Our Nursery Schools." Three short talks on "Infant Voices'' were given by Airs. A. J. Starmer, Mrs. A. N. Orcutt and Mrs. Kelly. Children from the primary de partment taking part on the pro gram included: Donna Clair, reading; Carolyn Pattison. and Lonelta Kelly, vocal duct, accom panied by Airs. W. H. Pattison; Carolyn Burr, reading, and group singing of Home Sweet Home" accompanied by Mrs. Or cutt. . Wimbcrly, president, conducted the business meeting of the Lady Elks Thursday night at the temple, after which' the group attended the Roseburg Cily Band concert presented at the Elks meeting. Lunch was enjoy ed later in the evening. Plans are being made for a six thirty o'clock potluck dinner to be held at the temple May 25. Committees will be announced later. The hostess committee in cludes: Mrs. Albert Mieelli, chair man, Mrs. Charles Healy, Mrs. Arnold Davis and Mrs. Maurice Hallmark. High score prizes will be awarded winners in contract bridge and pinochle. JANICE ANN GROSS CELEBRATES SECOND BIRTHDAY AT PARTY Janice Ann Gross celebrated her second birthday anniversary at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hcston Gross Tuesday afternoon. Amiot, a surprise party was given the Rev. Father Wil liam Coughlan In honor of his birthday, anniversary. The two circles of the Altar so ciety presented a birthday gift to Father Coughlan and a large, decorated birthday cake was cut in honor of the occasion. j MR. AND MRS. Mr. and Mrs. Clem Schneider were ballot ed upon and elected to become members by initiation. Jack Ulrich, who just returned from a trip east, gave a very in teresting talk comparing Oregon agriculture, climate and beauty with that of the states he had vis ited and expressed the opinion the Oregonians should be most pleased with the advantages found in this state. Charles Emery, legislative chairman, gave a fine biography of the late R. A. Booth and also reported plans for an interna tional currency. The Riversdale Home Econom ics club served the senior ban quet at the hall May 12 and com mittee in charge included: Ra- mona Hampton, chairman, assist ed by Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Tipton, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Chilson, Vera Aloore, Anita Stark and Arlene Alyers. I The regular meeting of the H. E. club will be Alay 17 at the hall. A 12:30 potluck luncheon will be held and the public is invited to attend to hear Miss Mary Maw, Douglas county home demonstra tion agent, give a talk on "Food for the Family." Those attending are asked to bring their own ta ble service. Darley Ware asked all persons having pets to appear for the pet parade sponsored by the Mount ed police. W. O. " meeting of the year Monday night at the junior high building with Mrs'. Leslie Roberts, president, In charge. A most engaging pro gram was presented by pupils ot the junior high school. Following the one act play entitled "Ho. Rosiland", which was cleverly acted by outstanding pupils; the Glee club sang "Thanks Be to God" and "All American School". The words of the latter were writ ten by Georgene Shanklin, of the 9th grade. . , Following the program in the auditorium, all were invited to Room 104 by Mr. Buell to see a vrestling match between students of the school. Those participating were DicK Urr vs. Maynard Tal ley; Charles Schoficld vs. Bob Ro gan. Hod Turner acted as ref eree, Mr. Buell timer. . , A short business meeting was held during which a fund was voted towards a 4-H scholarship and a committee comprising Mrs. J. M. Bartley, Floyd Ramp and Mrs. C. A. Chamberlin, were ap pointed to handle same. The fol lowing officers were elected and installed for the coming year.
