ROSEBURG WOMAN'S CLUB PLEDGES SUPPORT TO CONCERTS AT MEETING The Roscburg Woman's club met, Tuesday at. the clubhouse to do Red, Cross, work under the di rection of; Mrs. Mj Av Murdock and Mrs. E, L. Knapp, , Miss Helen Casey, of the pro gram committee, presented David Ferguson, New York representa tive for Columbia Concerts, Inc., who told of the Community, Con cert association plan organized this week in Roseburg and -announced that- the first concert would be in Roseburg, January 29, at which time Dorothy May nor, world-famous soprano, would be heard. The women of the club pledged their support to the movement and anumber, of the members have, spent, the ,week, working as volunteer cam paign workers. Two very beauti fy recordings of Miss. Maynor's were enjoyed. '. The beautiful decorations, were ;arrangcd, by, Mrs, H. O. Pargeter and Mrs. Velle,. Broadway and the members, voted, to have the two ladles arrange their- special, flower, arangements. at, the first, ;meetlng of the club every, month, instead- of - the second, meeting. Mrs. Pargeter's and Mrs. Broad way's, artistic arrangements arc greatly enjoyed by the members, aiuj, their, guests'. Mrs, D.; W. Helllwell gave a. talk on- the Infantile Paralysis drive and. a, sum was voted to be given by, the club and a collection was taken at the meeting to be turned over to the drive fund. . Mrs. G. V, Wimbcrly, president presented Mrs. Louis Albert Banks, who gave an . exceptionally interestnlg roll-call talk on the Bible on the subject, "Isaiah's Mystery Chapter." Mrs. Banks told of spending years In the search of an explanation of Isaiah 18 and that her attention iwas brought to the. verse In 1935 with Italy s conquest of Ethiopia; the second mention, she noticed was from a.May,1936issue of the News-Review and she added ad. dltlonal knowledge to this subject from an article In 1936 published in, the Liberty magazine, but the final Information was found by her in, an old book, which she found in an antique shoo in haiem, wnicn was published In 1838. All of Mrs. Banks' talks on the, Bible are of exceptional interest and are deeply appreci ated by the group. I hose present were: Mrs. G. V. GROUP ENJOYS DELIGHTFUL MEETING SUTHERL1N, Jan. 21. The Girls and Boys Scout troops are finishing nicely with the first re quirements of Folk dancing l square dancing). The dances are being held in the Caribou hall hrough the courtesy of Robert, Thomas. The dancers were agree- ihly surprised last Saturday eve ning when Mr. Carl Timm of Wilbur appeared and volunteered to play the piano for them. He was accompanied on the violin by vein Spire and the two made lively music all evening. Both Mr. Timm and Mr. Squire play with ease, any of the tunes necessary lor this type of dancing. The in structor, Lelloy Jones, unnounccd that he thought the young people were good enough dancers to have heir party. It has been set for about the 22 of January, and will bo an old fashioned dancing party with a basket supper serv ed afterward. BRUCE LATTIN, JR. No regulur item of business was transacted at, this time but it, was decided to give a generous subscription to the War chest which drive has not. yet officially closed. Mrs. Ruth Plumer, first past president, acting as installing of ficer, assisted by Evelyn Cyrus as guide, installed the following officers for 1944: president, Mrs. Elaine. E. Refreshments were served later ART AND EMBROIDERY CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON MEETING The Roseburg Art and Em broidery club met at the home of Mrs. H. F. Snyder at 709 Cobb street, Wednesday afternoon, with Mrs. Alice Rhoads as hostess. Sewing was enjoyed and later an interesting game, causing much hilarity, was played. Refresh ments were served at the tea hour by Mrs. Snyder, assisted by Mrs. Frank Bergh and Mrs, Don Snyder. Those present were: Mi's. Shoroy, leader, and Viola Aldropp, junior, leader, organized Cooking I, girls from 9. to 12 years old. The officers are: Presi dent, Betty Jane Jones; Vice President, Ellen Holleman; Secre tary, Evelyn Cornish. They will hold , their meetings cither Wednesday or. Thursday. Sewing- I held, their meeting Thursday afternoon, with Mrs. R, B. Carman, leader, and Lola Slowe, junior leader. SUTHERLIN, Jan. 21, Tfte weekly Girl Scout meeting was held, Friday, January. 7. Th,e girls, are aL working on their badges which are to be presented to them at the Court of Awards. Some of the girlS-wlU.be Second Class Scouts when they get their ten badges presented to them. They decided to have their Court of Awards about February 15. The two- patrol leaders, are to , have the' magazines, and old, jewelry ready to send to the sol diers.
