Mr. and Mrs. L. Walsh were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roach, Christmas. : Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Culver very graciously entertained at a very lovely one-thirty o'clock Christmas dinner at their home on Third Avenue. Beautiful col ored lights and holly with large long tapirs graced the beautiful lace covered table. Covers were placed for, Mr and Mrs. Clarence Thompson o Umpqua, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Culver, Sr. and the host - and , hostess Mr. and Mrs. Culver and sons, Gene and Jackie. The pleas ant afternoon was spent in visit ing. HOLIDAY PARTY HELD BY GROUP Sulhcrlin The Suthcrlln Girl Scouts enjoyed a Christmas party held in the Methodist Church parlors Wednesday evening. The room was very pretty decorated with a largo Christmas tree and the table was centered with Christmas motifs and long rod tapirs. The exchange of gifts and singing of Carols was the entertainment of the evening. The girls In'a group went to their scout leader's home, Mrs. Lyla Chcnowith, who was sick with the Flu and sang Carols and presented her a lovely gilt from the group. At a late hour de licious refreshments were served to Mrs. Jimmy Lang anil Mrs. Louie Bruncilo, Virginia Norris, Beverly Pope, Juno Young, Dol ores Martin, Patsy Lou Wadl Donna Cracioft, Barbara Sen rich, Lc Ann McCreary, Evelyn Gorman, Evelyn Cornish, Agnes Pleuard, Cnrola Spnckman, Jean Maxlno Rltchoy, Beverly Van slcnburg, Betty Jo Jloyt. ' REGULAR MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY Suthorlln The Boy Scout's of the Beaver Patrol hold their regular meeting last Wednesday evening at (he home of Jackie Culver. Christmas gifts were exchanged and at a late hour refreshments were served. The usual studying was omitted and instead games were enjoyed during the pleasant evening. Those present wore: Wayne Riotman, Donald Robertson, Earl Pluead, Jack Culver, Lloyd Ilol gate, Dick Cocnenberg and Gone Culver. MR. AND MRS. PAYNE CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY Suthcrlln Jan.- Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Payne celebrated their eighteenth anniversary last Sun day with a very delightful dinner at their homo on Umpiia Aven ue. Beautiful chysanthonuuns and tall tapirs graced the beau tiful lace covered table. Covers were placed for: Mi and Mrs. Owen Rose and daught ers, Barbara and Donna Kao, Kvelyn nnd Jimmy Payne and Hie host and hostess Mr. and Mrs. Payne. GLIDE HOLIDAY AFFAIRS ENJOYED GLIDE The families living at Idlcyld Park held a party in the dining room at the store on Christmas eve. A gaily decorated tree was enjoyed and gifts were served at the close of the evening and all those attending spent a very enjoyable occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Picket McMlllen had as their guests on Christmas day, Fred Smith, Lyman Stiles. Fred Kuesel, Geo. Hustan, and Oscar Weeks. ' Mr..1 and lAva. Alvln Bechtold spent the day In Roseburg with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Balou and two daughters went to Suthcrlln where Ihey were gimsts of Mrs. Balous sister. Mr. and Mrs. Weaver and laughter, Karen went to Myrtle Creek where they visited their parents on Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. Marlon and Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey entertained Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy of Rose burg, parents of Mrs. Marlon and Mrs. Ramsey. CLIFFORD WAT80N SURPRISED AT PARTY Suthcrlln, J a n The B o Y Scouts of troop 19 surprised their Scoutmaster, Clifford Watson, at a lovely Christmas party last Thursday evening at his home on tho Pacific highway about one-half mile south of Suthor lln. The evening was enjoyed Immensely and refreshments were served to the following Scout's Earl Pleuard, John Mils grove, Jack Culver, Donald Rob ertson, Tommy Chcnowith, Jim my Lang, Gone Culver, Wayne Musgrove, Dick Firman, Lloyd Iiolgate, Dick Cocnenberg, and Ine guest of honor and his wKo, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Watson. The patrols each presented their S'oul master with a very lovely Christmas gift. GUESTS ENTERTAINED AT E. R. HARVEY HOME GLENDALE, Jan - Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Harvey entertained tlv following guests, at their home New Years eve, Mrs. Tom Hun wicker. Mr. Frank Hunsncker, Mr. and Mrs. George Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Garrett, Mrs. Wilton Garrett, Mrs. Gert rude Lystul and Miss Alice Nebel. Conservation was enjoyed, fol lowing which a delicious buffet supper was served. FAMILY DINNER IS ENJOYABLE EVENT Yoncalla, Jan Mrs. Bernlce Wilson and her brother Oscar McDole entertained at a family dinner at their home Christmas day. Those present Included, Miss Elberta Wilson of Marshfleld, Miss Lavina Wilson and Miss Lota Brant of Eugene, Miss Lois Brant of Monmouth, and Mrs. J. D. Wilson and two sons of Me- Minnvillc and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brant and daughter Joanne of Yoncalla. New Officers Seated By Roseburg Kiwanians New officers of the Roseburg Kiwanis club were installed at the regular Tuesday luncheon meet ing by D. E. Carr, district lieu tenant governor. The officers are W. M. Campbell, president; H. C. Berg, vice-president; G. V. Wim- berly, treasurer; Harry Black, secretary; V. V. Harpham, Ralph Church, Rev. Wm. Coughlan, Earl Plummer, H. C. Wells, A. G. Hennlngcr, Dr. B. R. Shoemnkcr directors. R. R. Brand and Her bert W. Lenz wore introduced as new members of the club. Alleged Weakness In liberty Ships Will be Probed SEATTLE, Jan. 4. (AP) A sea captain who successively had two Liberty ships develop faults was quoted by Rep. Warren G. Magnuson (D.-Wash.) last night as saying "you can hear them crack like gunshot. And the cracks, once started, run like a woman's stocking." Magnuson, a member of the house naval affairs committee, attributed the statement to Capt. August Eckholm, master of the S. S. Joseph Henry, which he said split while being loaded in an Alaskan port, and the S. S. Henderon Luclling, which sus tained cleavage of deck plates. The disclosure brines to nine tho total number of Liberty ships 1 which have been reported to have I developed faults 'at sea ', or in port. . ' Magnuson said he would begin an on-the-spot investigation of two of them which he said were being repaired here. He said Cap tain Eckholm. told him the ships were not sufficiently strengthen ed longitudinally. The skipper told him: "These ships stand on a crest of a wave, with both ends shak ing like jelly." Magnuson said he was "whole heartedly in support of Senator Wallgron's demand that conver sion of these slow freighters to troop ships be stopped pending complete investigation." Sen. Mon C. Wallgren (D. Wash.) disclosed last week that he had learned of five ships de veloping faults at seas. On the basis of this report, Senator Tru man (D.-Mo.) announced yester day his war investigating com mittee had asked for a report on Liberty ship performance.
