A part of the proceeds will go to the Childrens Farm home at Cor- va Hours 9 to 12 29 FORMER ROSEBURG GIRL TO ATTEND SPECIAL TRAINING IN SPARS Seaman First Class Mabelle J. Lllburn, daughter of Mr . and Mrs. Frank Lllburn, of Salem, formerly of Roseburg, was in the first class of Spars to be select ed to attend the Link Instrument Trainer Instructors school nt na val air station in Atlanta, Ga., according to word received here. On completion of the 10-week course, which she started this week, the Salem Spar will be as signed to a coast guard air sta tion to instruct student pilots in Instrument flying. Miss Lllburn is a very talent ed violinist. She was born in Roseburg and attended Fuller ton grade school, later moving to Salem, where she was graduated from high school and Willamette university, where she received her B. M. degree, malorlng in music. She later worked as secre tary at Camp Adair nnd later transferred to the Arizona area, where she was emploved nt one of the large flying field schools. She Joined the Spars nnd was sent to Hunters college, New York City, in May, after which she was sent to the Spar office in Boston, Mass.. where she con tinued until being selected for the special training course at At lanta. Miss Liburn is a granddaugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Lllburn and a niece of Mrs. Lee A. We'ls of Roseburg. GRAND MASTER OF I. O. O. F. PAYS VISIT TO DOUGLAS LODGES Rav W. Comstock, of Baker, grand master of the I. O. O. F. of Oregon, paid his official visit to the Odd Fellows lolges ol Douelas county at a larpe affair in Roseburg at the hall Thurs day evening. The affair was preceded bv a turkey dinner. The committee in charge included: Ethel Bailey and Lena Poole, chairmen, assist ed by Inga High, Elsie Russell. Flma Stephens, Maggie Dent, Mamie Hudnell, Mamie Dimmick. Alice Goff, Lydia Roadman and Mabel Wilson. Ralph L. Russell acted as toastmaster and called on the grand officers and their wives, who responded with short talks. Mr. Comstock was accompa nied to Roseburg bv his wife and by William A. .Morand, grand secretary, and Mi. Morand, of Portland. Delegations ,rom Glendale, Canyonville, Myrtle Creek, Elk ton and Roseburg attended the affair. The Roseburg Girls Drum corps serenaded the members and were treated to the turkey dinner. . WILSON HONORED AT CHARMING SHOWER PARTY WEDNESDAY Miss Virginia Roller and Mrs. E. G. High were Joint hostesses at a miscellaneous shower Wed nesday evening, at the latter's home 531 East Lane, honoring Miss Melba "G. Wilson of Riddle, Oregon, Bride-elect of Raymond J. Netzel, Cpl. CLUBHOUSE The annual chrysanthemum exhibit to be sponsored by the Roseburg Woman's club will be a very enioyable pvpnt of next Saturday, November 20, from 10 a. m. to 9 p. m. at the clubhouse. All, growers in the county are urged to exhibit their chrysanthe mums. Mrs.' Hatfield cones to her work well qualified. A tormer school teacher, Mrs. Hatfield has held high positions In many local organizations. She Is a past presi dent of Hie local Legion auxiliary, a past noble grand of the Re hekah lodge and recently served two terms as president of the Woman's club. She has served actively in Red Cross and health units. Over a yearago, Mrs. Hat field trained to become a Gray Lady. To do this work, one must take various courses under the doctors and nurses at the Veter ans hospital, which will acquaint the members with hospital tech niques and ethics as well as give her a better understanding of the veteran in this type of hos pital, without this training Mrs. Hatfield would still have been a natural for the job. She has a son In the service and has the kindly sympathy and poise neces sary to work with veterans of the last war and the young men Just returned, of whom there are many at the local facility. Mrs. Hatfield's first job will be to get Christmas gifts ready for the ift shop, which is maintained by the auxiliary each year. Men who are unable to shop for their gifts to wife or children may se. cure whatever they find and wish at the gift shop with no cost to themselves. The lovely gifts ire furnished by the units throughout the state. Armistice day was spent quiet ly with legionnaires. Following 'he program at the theater a noon luncheon was held at the K. P. hall. Commander Erwin Short :ntrodured the several speakers, -mnng whom were Major Mor "an.. Sergeant John Mclsaac, Tommy Adkins, Unit President Mrs. L. A. Rhorlen. Child Welfare Worker Mrs. Ned Dixon, Mrs. Hatfield, Commander of the Suth- erlin-Oakland Post and Mrs. Ted Post, Douglas county Red Cross secretary. Mrs. Post Is a member not only of the auxiliary but of the Legion. She served over seas as a Red Cross muse in the last war. Ellen says her only re gret now is In having been born thirty years too soon. She would' still like to be In the fray. Consensus of opinions express ed by the service men were that his time the job must be finish ed, thai the men must fight not for an armistice this time, but for the unconditional surrender of the axis powers, that they must be made impotent to create an other conflict within the next century. Unit members were happy to welcome Mrs. J. L. Pounds, secre tary for two years. She is now living in Lebanon and came to Roseburg to take her daughter, Wllmn, home with her for the duration. Turkey Shoot Dated Here By State Guard Company Company A, 17th battalion, Oregon State guard, will sponsor a turkey shoot at the rifle range in North Roseburg, Sunday, Nov. 21. Captain S. C. Dunn, com manding officer, announced to day. The shoot will be open to the general public. Participants may use their own rifles, or guns will be furnished. Classes will be arranged for marksmen, accord ing to guns and ability, giving all an equal opportunity to win prizes, lie staled.
