Dodgers, Yankees Win Their Games In Ninth Inning By AUSTIN BEALMEAR (Associated Press Sports Writer) While It may never earn them a citation from the office of de fense transportation, the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers appear determined to save themselves and the baseball fans a lot of travel by keeping the 1942 World series within range of a five-cent subway ride. Yesterday at Ebthls field, the Dodgers went to bat in the n'nh inning of a scoreless pitching duel between their ace, Lefty Larry French, and Mellon of the Phil adelphia Phils. They loaded the bases on two singles and a walk and sent Camilll to the plate. . Camllli, however, didn't lay a bat on the ball. He merely waited out a walk which forced the win ning run across, giving the Dod gers the verdict, 10. Meanwhile, the Yankees went to bat against the Boston Red Sox With the score tied in the last half of the ninth. They also load ed the bases with one away and brought up Charlie Keller. Keller picked out a pitch he liked, slammed it for his 18th homer of the year and presented the Yankees with an 8-4 triumph. Cards Win Twin Bill The Cards downed the Chicago Cubs twice, 9-4 and 8-3. Beazlcy registered his 13th pitching vic tory in the opener, although he yielded 10 of the 11 hits and fail ed to finish. The Cards coasted through in the afterpiece oh 13 blows. "Double no-hlt" Vander Meer tossed a three-hitter at the Pitts burgh Pirates in a night contest which the Cincinnati Reds won, 3-0. Earlier in the day, the Braves knocked the New York Giants loose from their hold on third place by sweeping a doublehead er, 10 and 8-2, ending the Giants' five-game winning streak. Franklin's two-run single led the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 tri umph in the first game with Cleveland, and Newhouscr blank ed the Tribe, 20, on five hits in the second. Auker pitched the St, Louis Browns tj a 6-3 decision Over the Chicago White Sox, but he had to be rescued in the ninth when the Sox scored all their runs. iillifw (iitt7"'CE Local All-Stars To Battle Team So Far Unbeaten The Quality Market Softball team of Cottage Grove, which will meet the Roseburg All-Stars In a benefit game here Sunday, is considered one of the strongest Softball aggregations in the state. The team so far has been unde feated this season, having won 14 straight games, including nine wins In league play and five over outside teams. The visiting team needs only one more victory to be assured of the Cottage Grove city league championship. Six of the nine regulars of the Quality Market squad have better than .300 batting averages for the season. The game here is to be a re turn match, Roseburg having been beaten 3 to 2 in a game at Cottage Grove last week. The con test Is sponsored by the Lions club and all proceeds will go to the u. S. n. The game Is to be played at FInlay Held Sunday aft ernoon. The main game Will be preceded by a Pce-Wee exhibition starting at 1 o'clock. CAP) Lt. Gov. Cnarles C. Gossett of Nampa today conceded the nomi nation of Glen Taylor, cowboy- singer from Pocatello, as demo cratic candidate for United States senator. Taylor will 'oppose Senator Thomas of Gooding, -republican, in the November-election. Thom as defeated Taylor two years ago for the unexpired term of the late Senator William E. Borah. Gossett sent this telegram to his guitar-strumming opponent: "Congratulations, Glen. Get on your horse, come over and help me stack the hay. We'll will the general election." Taylor campaigned by horse back and attracted crowds by singing. .Working Near Grants Pass Mars Southwick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred L. Southwick, of this city, has left for Grants Pass to work in the Cook hopeyard dur- Ing the harvesting season. Beavers, Angels fpli 1 2; Tucpm Loses in Tenth (By the Associated Press) The last-place Portland Beavers are not plaing the way their Pac ific Coast league baseball record Indicates they should and the re sult Is embarrassing the top Los Angeles club. Last night the Beavers Just missed sweeping a doubleheader from the Angels, who won the seven-inning opener, 5-4, In the final Inning, but dropped a free hitting second-game 6-4. In the nightcap Portland amass ed 14 safeties to 11 hits collected by the Angels. Llska dueled Raffensberger and Davis,, Angel hurlers, in the first game, as the Beavers played one of their rare error-less games. The Angels collected nine hits and the Beavers seven. Portland won on, the previous night. Solons Make Gain Sacramento, the -second-place club, climbed to within two and one half games of the Angels by thumping Oakland for -the sec ond -consecutive -night, 8-3. The Solons trailed, 2-3 going in to the seventh when they scored five runs after the usually steady Salveson blew up to yield four. bases- on balls and three hits.. Yelovic .gave up two additional hits in the ninth for a total of 10 safeties collected by Sacramento. Rookie Earl Torgeson, Rainier first baseman, nomered In the fourth to give Fischer the win over Sam Gibson, Seal pitcher. At Hollywood, Thomas yielded ten "hits but defeated his former employers, the San Diego Padres, 4-3. It -was Thomas' sixth straight win since Joining Hollywood. He had lost nine straight, while on the Padre club earlier this season. Dunham's tank Chiefs From League Top Spot Dunham's Transfermen pulled the Texaco Chiefs out of league leadership and went into a tie with Boucock's Butchers for first place In the City Softball league last night by a 3 to 2 victory in a close and well-played contest. The Chiefs landed on 'Kenny Laurance -for two runs in the first Inning, but throughout the balance of the contest were un able to get a runner around the bases, as Laurance tightened con trol and was given good support' in ihe field. Dunham's pushed one run across the plate in the third in ning and added two more In the sixth as the Chiefs defense -collapsed briefly. Al Flegel was On the mound for the Texaco team.
