Morris H. Roach read a letter from the board of missions telling of present con ditions to be found in the Philip pines; report on Haines house in Alaska by Mrs. VV. G. Blake; year book of prayer, Mrs. Ida Bailey; devotions, Mrs. Earl Aeee on "Second Place to Second Things," proup singing; letter from Miss Jrcne Forsythe, missionary in Q'hina, was read by Mrs. George Sewell; invocation for the nation at three o'clock given by Mrs. Earl Ullrich, and group singing of "America." The music for proup singing was played by Mrs. Homer Grow. Mrs. Campbell presided over the business meeting and reports of committees were given. Plans were discussed for summer and early fall work of the organiza- tion. The next meeting will be July 9th at the church parlors with Mrs. W. M. Chalmers as hostess chairman, and the next executive meeting was announced for two o'clock June 29th at the church. VOICE AND PIANO RECITAL IS CHARMING EVENT OF TUESDAY .O The voice and piano recital that was given by pupils of Mrs. Charles Brand and Miss Gladys Strong last Tuesday evening at the Baptist church was well at tended and greatly enjoyed. The church was beautifully decorated with spring flowers and made an attractive setting for the recital. John Dixon and Bob Krell serv ed as ushers. Mrs. Brand presented four pu pils Julia and Caroline Perkins, Betty Swift, and Marilyn Harp ham. They sang sweetly with good interpretation. AH of them have studied only a few months but. they sang pleasingly with poise. All of Miss Strong's pupils were of junior and senior high school age. Only one had been present d in previous public recitals. Qt'hey played with a great deal of interest and showed a thoughtful approach to their music study. They played with good style, de veloping the mood of the various compositions, having good rhy them and good tone quality. Six students were presented in solos. The two piano numbers were of especial interest to the audience. Miss Strong presented the fol lowing: Priscilla Wade, Joyce Bartley, Tom Carter, Donald Brand, Shel don Chambers, Bettv Swift, Elaine Rhoden, Elliott Motsehen baeher. Jonathan Shepherd, Elea nor Micelli, Patricia Savage and Lou Helen Strange. FRIENDLY CIRCLE CLUB MEETS AT BLEVINS HUME The Friendly Circle club met Ot the home of Mrs. Nancy Ble ins with eleven members pres ent including: Mrs. Daynise .Reach, Mrs. Mavis Pfaff, Mrs. Margaret Pfaff, Mrs. Helen Dun can Mrs. Elizabeth Gresham, Mrs. Lulu Townsend, Mrs. Grace Digbv, Mrs. Ada Rodgers. CLIFFORD E. SMITH ENTERTAINS RETIRING AND INCOMING COUNCIL MEMBE Mrs. Clifford E. Smith, retir ing president of the Junior Wo- mans club, entertained the in coming and outgoing council members at a very charming eight o'clock dessert supper Thursday evening at her home on Cobb street. Snapdragons and Cecil Brunner roses formed a very beautiful motif for the oc casion. Covers were placed for Mrs, Adrian Bowen, Mrs. J. E. Hen- best, Mrs; .Norman Hess, Mrs. Carl Wassom, Mrs. Fletcher Gar dner, Mrs. Don Johnson, Mrs, Robert Harris, Miss Dorothy Crummett, Mrs. Fred Dent, Mrs. Perry Thiele and the hostess, Mrs. Smith. Cards were enjoyed during the pleasant evening hours with prizes going to Mrs. Bowen and Mrs. Hess. MRS. O. R. HESS IS HOSTESS AT SALAD LUNCHEON FOR CLUB Mrs. O. R. Hess entertained her bridge club at a very delightful one-thirty o'clock salad luncheon at her beautiful home In Laurel weel Wednesday afternoon. Gor geous bouquets of peonies and roses were used about the rooms, while dainty bouquets of apri cot, colored Cecil Brunner roses graced the serving tables. Guests enjoying the afternoon with Mrs. Hess included Mrs. Henry Shirtcliff, Jr., of Myrtle Creek, and Mrs. Clyde Carstens and the following members: Mrs. Scott Williams, Mrs. A. D. Parr, Mrs. Frederick Chapman, - Jr., Mrs. U. D. Powell, Mrs. Stewart Cooper and Mrs. Frederick J. Porter. Contract bridge was enjoyed during the afternoon with Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Porter wjnning prizes. COUNTRY CLUB LADIES OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT PLAY The ladies of the Country club opened their annual champion ship golf tournament Thursday morning at the club course. The day's golf prize was won by Miss Helen Casey. Luncheon 1 was served at the clubhouse at noon to Mrs. L. E. McClintock, captain, Mrs. R. D. Bridges, Mrs. Kenneth Quine, Mrs. Guy Cordon, Miss Helen Casey, Mrs. J. C. Hume, Mrs. Harris Ellsworth, Mrs. J. M. Judd and Mrs. H. C. Stearns and daughter, Miss Madlyn. Contract bridge was enjoyed during the afternoon with Mrs. Stearns winning the high score. The ladies will resume the cham, pionship golf tournament play next Thursday morning with a potluck luncheon at 12:30 and contract bridge play at 1:30 o' clock. -FORMER ROSEBURG GIRL MARRIES IN OLYMPIA, APRIL 3rd The marriage of Miss Audrey McLaughlin, daughter of Mrs. V. K. Wyndearo, of Aberdeen, and Mr. H. H. McLaughlin, of Tillamook, Ore., to Mr. Oscar H. Vann, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Vann, of Aberdeen, was solemnized Friday, April 3, in Olympia. They were attended by Sergeant Hubler and Private Brady, of Fort Lewis. After a short wedding trip In Sound cities, the bride returned to Aberdeen to make her home and the groom returned to Fort Lewis where he is stationed with the United States army. The bride attended school in Roseburg and has a large num ber of relatives and friends in this city. MISS CAROL CARNES ENTERTAINS SEWING CLUB ON THURSDAY Miss Carol Carnes very gra ciously entertained the members of her sewing club at her home at Carnes station Thursday even ing. Those enjoying the occasion included: Miss Beatrice Cooney, Mrs. Henry Chandler, Jr., Mrs. J. E. Henbest, Miss Myrle Erickson, Mrs. Allan Moore, Mrs. J. SI. OREGON WAR BOND QUOTAS FOR JUNE WASHINGTON, D. C, June 1. Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Secretary of the Treasury, today made known June War Bond quotas for the 3,070 counties in the nation to all State and County War Savings Staffs. The June quota for the State of Oregon is $7,746,000. The county quotas, based upon a substantial increase over May quotas, are expected to reach ten per cent of in come when the nation goes on a billion-dollar-a-month War Bond basis in July to help meet the war cost. "Everybody, every pay day, ten per cent," is the battle cry throughout the country. You can buy War Bonds at your Bank, Building & Loan Association, Post Office and at many department stores. Fol lowing the convention, Mrs. Hall craft will visit her brother, Frank Wilbur, who recently returned from Alaska and is now employed in the navy yard at Bremerton, Wash. Leave for Home Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pendro have left for their home in Leeds, S. Dak., follow ing a trip here to attend the fu neral of the latter's father, Peter Johnson, Sr. Other members of the family coming for the funeral and remaining here for a visit with relatives included Mrs. Bes sie Lavenik, postmistress at Ju neau, Alaska, and Peter John son, Jr., of Bremerton, Wash.
