Miss Anderson introduced the successful debaters who- had re turned the championship for the second straight year to Roseburg. The members of the championship team included Betty Jane Roberts, MargaretJ Ihompson, Varney Baker, and Jack Horn. The local debaters, after winn ing three of the first four pre liminary rounds, opened the final day of the tournament by defeat-' ing Medford high and thus gain ed the right to meet Hillsboro in the finals. Only six schools were able to participate In this year's tournament but they were the best the state had to offer. In the final rounds the decision was unanimous in favor of local affir mative, which had been chosen to debate the final round. Besides entering the debate contest Miss Anderson announc ed that several other events had been entered with much success. Margaret Thompson won the radio speaking contest from a field of eight contestants and again was the unanimous choice of five judges. In after dinner speaking Vivicnne Miller placed third while Fredricka Hamilton placed sixth in the extemporane ous speaking contest. All these contests were entered for the first time by the local speech stu dents and they had little time to prepare for them but their suc cess clearly shows helr ability. The Western Oregon and State of Oregon cups were presented to the local debaters following the successful defense of their cham pionship but since radio speaking was a new event in the tourna ment, there was no trophy given for this year.
