THREE Society and Clubs By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER O Mrs. Louis Albert Banks Speaks At Woman's Club Christmas Meeting One of the most Interesting Christmas meetings to be held by the Roseburg Woman's club oc curred Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Louis Albert Banks as the guest speaker. Beautiful Christmas deco rations were arranged about the rooms and following the program and the exchange of gifts, a holi day treat was served by the three hostesses. Mrs. Homer Grow accompanied the Christmas carols and played for Mrs. Floyd Lewis, who very c harmingly sang "Jesu Bambino." Mrs. Marry F. Hatfield, presi .dent, conducted the meeting and t the members decided that club meetings would be held in the fu ture as in the past. A largp num ber of the members are assisting In the defense program and every member of the club is assisting in some way in this national de fense work that is so necessary at this time. Mrs. Edward G. Kohlhagen read the minutes of the previous meeting. Mrs. H. B. Carter and Mrs. C. E. Roberts were appointed 'chair men of soliciting for the club in the new Red Cross drive. Mrs. Banks told of her experiences of publishing the two books of "Fingerprints of Bible People," which was pub lished by Revell last summer, af ter which, she gave an intensely interesting and illustrated talk on "The History ot tne lweive Tribes of Israel." Mrs. Banks was highly complimented for her unusually interesting and enjoy able talk. On behalf of the club, Mrs. TVin M Ralh. vice-nresident. I presented a lovely gift to Mrs. Hatfield, president, in apprecia tion of her excellent work as the head of this organization. Mrs.! C. E. Jump, Mrs. Mark L. Under wood and Miss Jennie Jorey had charge of the Christmas gifts. The January 6th meeting will be held at the clubhouse at a one thirty o'clock dessert-luncheon with Mrs. Homer Grow as chair man of the hostess committee and Mrs. Earl Ullrich as program chairman on the topic, "The Rose burg Woman's Club Service Shop." Every member and guest nttnnrtlnrr are asked to bring something for the service shop and are also asked to be prepared to tell something regarding the article. The meeting promises to be of unusual interest and enjoy ment and all memocrs are urgeu to attend. Mrs. B. W. Taylor, Mrs. George Frew and Mrs. I. B. The Women's Society of Chris tian Service met Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Ethel Brown. A plate luncheon was served at noon and a silver offering given last for the year. During the luncheon hour a Women's Defense club was or ganized with Mrs. E. A. Markham as leader and Mrs. A. J. Standley secretary. The club will meet at the church every Wednesday from ten till four to work on clothing, bandages, etc. Ladles will bring their lunch if they plan to work all day. Mrs. Markham appointed committees on several different phases of the work. Other organizations which usual ly meet on Wednesday will hold their business session the same as ever as they work. The Sew and So club met Thursday for a potluck luncheon and Christmas party, at the home of Miss Edna Harlan. The bountiful luncheon was served from a prettily deco rated table covered by a lace cloth with a small Christmas tree as a centerpiece. Afterward games were played and a Christ mas story ready. Those enjoying the meeting were Mesdames Maude Cowles, Myrtle Davis, Min nie Barker, Addie Bruton, Maude Alford, Lottie Vandervert, Frankie Coons, Annie White, Bessie Lakey and son, David, Miss Elsie Misegarver ana inc the United Workers class of the the First Christian church will be held at two o'clock Friday, De cember 19, at the home of Mrs. Mable P. Taylor at 101 West Rob erts street. An exchange of inex pensive gifts will be enjoyed. Mrs. H. F. Snyder will bo pro gram chairman and Mrs. Mable P. Taylor will conduct the devo tions on "The Shepherd of Belli." The afternoon promises to be of unusual enjoyment and all members are cordially invited to be present. CIVIC CLUB HAS MEETING WEDNESDAY DRAIN, Dec. 18. The Civic club met Wednesday afternoon in regular session. A new electric and wood range has been purchas ed for the club kitchen. In the evening the civic club family night and Christmas party was held with about 30 present. Mrs. Maude Cowles had charge of the program and Mrs. Bessie Lakey had the games. Refreshments were served at the close of the evening and gifts were exchang ed. The ladies will meet Friday morning at the home of Mrs. Mae Light to make kits tor soldier bovs with potluck at noon. Five dollars was voted for treats for the Christinas tree. Deserters Held Here to Be Delivered to Army Frank W. and Robert M. Peach, recently arrested here on a -charge of petty lurceny, aue to be turned over to army authori ties as deserters. Sheriff Cliff Thornton reported today. Army officers from Vancouver barracks are expected here tonight to take charge of the prisoners.
