EDWARDS One of the pathetic stories In the Old Testament is the story of Jacob running away from his home and; friends anq family because he had stolen the birthright from his broth: cr, Esau. And as he slept that night under the starry sky, he beheld a vision of angels go Ing back and forth on a ladder set between heaven and earth, and he heard the voice of God promising prosperity and peace for him and his chil dren. When he awoke he said: "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not. This is none other than tho home of God and thlR is tho gate of heaven. Accordingly, he nam ed the place Beth-El, the home of God. Tho house of God may be established wherever we are. God Is always more than willing to hold communion with His children. He needs no persuasion, though they often do. Every place may be Beth el life's most depressing mo ments .-may bo relieved by God's presence, If His children will but call upon Him. Jacob's part of the covenant at Bethel was very practical. He not only set up a memorial stone at this gate of heaven, he also pledged to return the Lord one-tenth of all the Lord gave him. Such a dedication still re mains the proper response for God's favor. Sarah Flowers Adams has memorialized this story of Jacob in her immortal hymn, "Nearer My God to Thee, Nearer to Thee." May we make our daily surround ings a Bethel to our souls. Amen.
