HOLD JOINT MEETING The American Homo and Hue Arts departments ot the Junior Wonians' club held a combined meeting Wednesday evening at the attractive home of Mrs. Perry Thlole. Tho Christmas motif was beautifully carried out in the deco ration:. During the evening tho group carved angels ironi soup to be used In the decorations for the an nual Christmas party at the coun ty hospital. The majority of the members of the two departments worked on national defense and those at the meeting discussed plans Tor the club to assist the defense program. U., graciously pre sided over the mooting held Wednesday at the homo of Mrs. C. II. WIckham on Mill street, at which time Attorney Thomas Hartficl gave a very fine talk on "Juvenile Delinquency." His talk was very greatly appreciated by the members and guests. A very beautiful devotional service was conducted by Mrs. Myra Wilson. Discussion of the W. C. T. U. booth at the turkey Show was held. Mrs. Luclla Rice will serve the Roseburg union at the booth. Proceeds raised from articles sold from the booth will benefit the Children's Farm Home at Corvallls. The members and guests in attendance brought lovely gifts to be sent to the chil dren at the home during the Christmas holidays. Sprays and garlands of holly graced tho attractively appointed tea table. Hostesses In charge of the refreshments included: Mrs. WIckham, Mrs. Charles A. Ed wards and Mrs. George Leeper. Tho regular business meeting was held and new officers were elected for the coming year. The new president is Mrs. Franklin, and the secretary Is Mrs. Patter son. She was employed in Roseburg three years, before going to Los Ange les, where she is now employed by the Crown Willamette Paper company. The bridegroom, who is well known here, having spent several winters in this city, was graduated from Pasadena high school and Junior college. He is now employed at the North American Aircraft company in Inglewood, Calif. YOUTHS TEMPERANCE COUNCIL HAS MEETING AND CHRISTMAS PARTY The Youths Temperance Coun cil mot at the home of Mildred Frohmader Tuesday evening with Maxino King, president, conduct ing the business session. A writ ten test was taken by the group on the series of alcohol lessons studied during tho last year. A Christmas party followed the busines mooting, at which time the decorated and lighted tree was enjoyed and the group held a taffy pull. Holly decorated the rooms for the party. Those enjoying the evening in cluded Mildred Frohmader, Mar caret Harvey, Lowinc Jones, Wanda and Lois Jurgens, Maxine King, Patricia Murphy, Virginia Roselund, Richard and Raymond Dunning. HOME ECONOMICS CLUB HAS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TEA ON THURSDAY The Home Economics club of Roseburg senior high school held its annual Christmas tea and ini tiation the evening of December 4th at the home economics room. The mothers and friends of the girls were invited to enjoy the affair. The established national initiation ceremony was used with the following girls partici pating: "Spirit of Home Living," by Helch Wann; "Charm" by El la Mae Cloako;. "Dependability" by Ruth Hansen; "Cooperation" by Lois Fowler, and "Happiness" by Jerry Johnson. The following girls were Ini tiated by the club: Vice-president, Ruble Golden; Vivian Miller, Jane Walker, Wanda Jurgens, Beverly Kruse, Eula Carnahan, Ruth Lewis, Maxine King and Carol Crossland. Miss Carol Carnes was Initiated as an honorary member. The pro gram Included a vocal solo, "O, Holy Night," by Mrs. Floyd Lew is; Interesting review of the life of "Ellen H. Richards," by Vir ginia Walsh, club president. Ellen H. Richards is the founder and first president of the national home economics association. Helen Wann read a Christmas story and the sextette sang Christmas carols. Catherine liv ing acted as pianist for the pro gram. Tea was served at the close of the program and Miss Dorothy White and Miss Athalic Taylor, past presidents of the club, poured. P.-T. A. MEETING S HELD AT GREEN SCHOOL FRIDAY NIGHT The pledge to the flag and God Bless America opened the De comber meeting of the Green P. T. A. Friday evening at the school house with a large number of parents and children present. Due to the absence of the presi dent, Ernest Bilgcr, vice-presi dent, had charge of the business mectingReports of various com mittees were heard and Mrs.. Jo seph Porter was appointed chair man lor the Christmas treats. Mrs. John Hess was appointed refreshment chairman for the January meeting. The lower grades room won the picture for this month by having the largest number of parent? attending the meeting. Mrs. Walter Jones was assisted with the educational program by Mrs. Chas. Inslcy, Mrs. H. L. Lander and Mrs. Percy Myers. Two duets were played by Norma and Shirley Fisher at the piano. A reading, "Brother and Sisterly Love," was given by Alice Bowcn. . , Mr. James gave an intercstinc talk and showed moving pictures of Alaska, which he had taken last summer. R. L. Preston presented Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Davis with a large mirror from their friends and neighbors'. Mr. and Mrs. Da vis are moving to Suthcrlin to make their home. Mrs. John Hess will have charge of the refreshments and Mr. Louellcn in charge of enter tainment for the January meet ing. METHODIST CHOIR INVITES PUBLIC TO CHRISTMAS MUSICALS The Methodist church choir has invited the public to enjoy a Christmas muslcale to be pre sented at the church at 7:30 o'clock the evening of December 21st. Mrs. Paul Goddes is director and organist. The choir has selected carols and anthems from the new and more modern type of music. A number of the anthems are re ported to bo unusually beautiful and the words carry special senti ment of the Christmas season and holiday spirit. About thirty voices will be in the choir. The silver offering to be taken at the service, will be used to start a fund to purchase now choir robes. Carols with descants and a spe cial anthem entitled, "Christmas in tho Wood" by Mabel Daniels, describing all of the creatures in the wood and tholr reaction to the birth of the Christ child, will be outstanding features on tho program. Choir rehearsals lake place at tho church every Tuesday eve ning at 7:30 o'clock. 1 -i -"'-J-' 1 iOT 1 J STATE REBEKAH PRESIDENT PAYS OFFICIAL VISIT TO REBEKAH LODGE NO. 41 Roseburg Rebekah Lodge No. 41 held a very interesting meet ing Tuesday evening when 56 members and 12 visitors greeted Mrs. Myrtle McAlpin, state presi dent of the Rebekah assembly here for her official visit. 4 Mrs. McAlpin, Mrs. ' Edythe Florence Kelley, past president of the A. Fox, Jean Mlddleburg, Marjorle Wolford and Hazel Stock. Mrs. Norma Waltermire, P. N. G. of Hope Rebekah lodge, Ash land, was welcomed as a member by deposit of card. President McAlpin gave a short address stressing fratcrnalism and the need of friendship and co-operation, following which she was presented with a lovely chenille bedspread as a token of remembrance from No. 41. Short talks were also given by Mrs. Edythe F. Kelley, Miss Jeanne Buick (charter member), Mrs. Margaret Bannlnger, of Friendship Rebekah lodge, Lin coln, Kans., Mrs. A. W. Arlan son, North Bend, and Mrs. H.H riote Hoaphy, of Gold Beach, Ore. The lodge decided to make and equip an indefinite number of khaki comfort kits for army boys hospitalized during the holidays, and will meet next Wednesday afternoon, December 17, in the Red Cross rooms in charge of Mrs. Mabel Wilson, for work.
