Wilkens, ' of Lorraine, Kansas, ro present directly from Kan- A beautiful decorated angel food birthday cake was made by Mrs. Mary Jacoby, of Looking glass, in honor of all Kansans whose birthdays occurred In Au gust. William Hoeft and Mr. Por ter made a beautiful gladioli floral piece to be presented to the oldest lady present in honor of heir mothers. The floral piece was presented to Mrs. Elias Rhoads, of this city, who Is eighty years of age. The business meeting was call ed to order by the president, Roy E. Wells. Oren Gildersleeve, of Kellogg, was elected president for the coming year and Mrs. Kath erine Cory was re-elected secretary-treasurer. After the regular business ses sion the afternoon was enjoy ably spent in visiting and ex changing Pollyanna gifts. At the tea hour the hostess served dainty refreshments to Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Lura Lince, Miss Edna Smith, John Allan Burkhart, Charles Gardner and Darrell Marsters, guests, and Margaret Burkhart, Minnie Cox, Vera Guiley, Avis Harmon, Vivian Marsters, Bea Ott, Barbara Orr and Blanche Tipton, members. CLAUDE BAKER With one of the biggest years since its inception ahead of the American Legion and its auxil iary it is most fitting that the lo cal groups have chosen so wisely in electing their commander and president. For the second time Roseburg has chosen a team of husband and wife, Mr. and Mis. Irvin Ridgel. Both are most fa miliar with the program of the Legion and will be highly effi cient in; carrying it out. Bess Riegel, who; was elected by a unanimous vote of the auxiliary, has been a ' faithful officer of both the local- unit and the state department. Already she has planned a happy balance be tween work and play for the next few months. Because she is a state chairman and must necessarily devote much of her time to state work it will be tha more necessary for every mem ber to do her part in making the unit work successful. At a joint installation cere mony to be held at Drain next Wednesday night with the Reeds port and Drain groups, Mr. and Mrs. Riegel will be inducted into office, Roseburg will act as in stalling officers. All those in the installing team are urged to be at the armory at 7:30 Mon day night to practice. Tuesday afternoon at s o ciock the Legion will present another radio program. So much ot in terest is transpiring of late that you will not want to miss this. If Victor Micelli, district com mander, appears less "radiant" than usual Wednesday morning it will be because he and many other Legionnaires will have re turned Tuesday night from a trip to Klamath Falls. "Vic" is to be installing oincer tor tne joint meeting at Drain. Mrs. Mi celli will act as sergeant-at-arms with a Legionnaire. Auxiliary officers will be attired in their prettiest formals and with Le gionnaire uniforms it will be a colorful ceremony. Refresh ments will follow this joint In stallation. Mr. Rapp and Mr. Gillespie are Oregon dele gates to the convention, which will close next Monday, Here For Vacation Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stanlelgh of Sonoma, Calif., arrived here Friday and will remain until September 3, enjoying a vacation on the North Umpqua river. Mr. and Mrs. Stanlelgh have spent their va cation here each year for the past five years, having reserva tions each seasons at Kentucky Homes. Mr. Stanlelgh, who is the publisher of the Index-Tribune at Sonoma, is an ardent fisherman and has found the North Umpqua river and its tributaries greatly to his liking.
