Dally, by carrier per yea' 7.BU There Is a Route Via RoMburg, Tee THERE came to the editorial desk recently a copy of. a publication called the "ShatUa Cascadian" being the official , publication of the Shasta-Cascade Wonderland, organization. The Shasta-Cascade organiza tion is similar in character to . other groups organized along the same line and ior a similar pur pose. Two of these known best to residents of the southern part of Oregon are the Redwood Em pire association and the Oregon Pacific Highway association. The Shasta-Cascade unit Includes Jackson, Klamath and Lake counties In Oregon and the north ern group of four counties In California. The issue of the publication mentioned above contains a great deal of most interesting material about Diamond lake, with more than a page of space devoted to It. But we note, with no little consternation, that the fact that the lake can be reach ed by road via Roscburg up the beautiful North Umpqua river, is not mentioned. Of course the North Umpqua route Is new. It was only opened officially a year ago. It Is not a paved high-1 way trip but it IS a beautiful j drive. It is such an unusual and scenic trip that we are inclined to feel, that the Shasta-Cascadian and its sponsoring organization 1s most definitely missing a good bet In not giving It more atten tion as another very interesting connecting link between the Shasta-Cascade wonderland and the rest of the world. Under the heading "How to; .Reach Diamond Lake" appears (following Introductory statement .after which the various routes 'are described In detail: "Over beautiful new hard-surfaced high-' way, Diamond lake Ik 85 miles j from Medlord and 85 miles from .Klamath Falls." To that state 'merit we would , add that Dili- niond lake Is 8!) miles from Rose-1 burg. : It is a minor point, so far as 'this discussion is concerned, but it is nevertheless a fact, that j Diamond lake is In Douglas i "county of which. The Russians, he admits, are showing "magnificent strength and courage," the battle of the Atlantic Is going better and Ger man air superiority is being broken. But he adds: "The worst is not over. The vast mass of destructive muni tions which thi- Germans have made or captured, the courage, skill and audacity of their strik ing forces, (he ruthlessness of their centralized war direction and the resources of many lands which may to some extent be come available to them forbid the slightest relaxation." Free Softball Game Offered Fans Tonight Softball fans will have a free dish served to them tonight at Finlay field, when the Dunham Transfermen meet an all-star club picked from the Texaco and Montgomery Ward teams of the city league. The single game tonight will start at 8 o'clock. No admission charge will be made. Team sponsors and managers decided Wednesday night to set tle the first half championship, by having Dunham's and Bou cock's Butchers play the first game Friday night. The winner j of Friday's game will also win' the first half championship, and all other games postponed in the early part of the season will be' disregarded. Kb loss would be a gravo blow to the bolshe vlsts and would create an Imme diate threat to the entire struc ture of the Stalin defenses. Thus while we shall be well advised to regard the situation with reserve, pending develop ments, the matter Is Insistent enough to call for a reexamina tion of what it will mean If the Hitlerites and their Finnish al lies do get possession of this great industrial city of 3,200. 000 inhabitants. Here are some vital points for consideration: Leningrad Is Russia's solo re maining port on the Baltic. It is the bridge-head for a network of railroads which extend into the country In all directions. Capture of Leningrad would cut the soviet union off from Its naval forces in the Baltic alto-1 gether, leaving this homeless and wandering navy to the mercy of German men-of-war and bomb ers. Not only does Leningrad give Russia her all-important access to the Baltic, but it Is one of the greatest industrial centers of the soviet. Here among many other products arc manufactured mu nitions of war, machnery of all sorts, chemicals and rubber. But apart from what Lenin grad means in itself, its capture would at once produce the men ace of a German-Finnish turning movement against the Stalin line, which has its right flank anchored on the port of Lenin grad. This menace would be mul tiplied If the nazis at the same timo pressed their assault on the center of the Stalin line in the Smolensk area. Defense Strategy Outlined Now, of course we don't know what the plans of the Russian command are to meet such a sit uation. It would be a seven days' wonder, however, If the reds hadn't worked out a very def inite line of strategy. Having foreseen war with Ger many, they have for years been preparing for just such an em ergency. V.'e have seen the ef fects of that preparation In the great resistance they have made thus far. The bolshevists likely would pull back to the line of the Volk hov river, which empties Into. Lake Ladoga some 75 miles east of Leningrad. For the purpose of keeping the front straight, the bolshevists might retire to the line of the Volkhov clear down through Novgorod to the Pskov sector. Upon which the move ment would pivot. In other words the reds would swing the entire northern end of their line back like a door which was -hinged near Pskov. Legion Baseball Finals Scheduled at Hillsbora PORTLAND, July 30. (API !
