One of the outstanding social events of the year took place, Wednesday nfternoon, when the annual Red Letter day silver tea, sponsored by the Yoncalla Women's study club took place. The tea was giv en in the Methodist church. Mrs. Edgar Richards, president of the club, gave the address of wel come, preceded by a piano solo by Mrs. Fred Merk. Hughis Has kell, assisted by Miss Beulah Ap plegate and Mrs. Gertrude Stoute and Miss Mildred Kruse, all grade school teachers directed a chorus of 50 voices from the grade school, singing, "Who Stole the Lock," "Boys May Whistle and Girls May Sing" and "God Bless Ameri ca." Little Joan Brant gave a fine reading followed by a short skit. Mrs. Lula Gorrell, county 'superintendent of schools, sang a beautiful solo, "Sing Me to Sleep," followed by two soprano solos by Mrs. Holgate of Sutherlin, Mrs. Gorrell was guest speaker, de scribing many beautiful works of art from China, Japan and India, which she had on display, con sisting of taocstries, carvings, drawn work, lacquer pieces, and many beautiful embroidery and other fancy work. Guests were then Invited to the Ed worth room where little tables were set, with small bou quets of violets and soring beau lies. Mrs. Edgar Richards and Mrs. Jess Lasswell poured from a well appointed table, graced with a beautiful lace cloth and f- Daintv refreshments were serv ed to the followlnc: Mrs. George Kali. Follow ing an official visit paid the local O. E. S. chapter by Mrs. Faye Ambrose, associate grand matron, Saturday afternoon, January 25; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thiele en tertained with a dinner oarty in her honor, at their Red Hill home. A lace table cloth covered the nrettily appointed table, at which. covers were placed for Mr. and Mrs. James Bovlngdon. Mrs. John Hakanson, Mrs. Ambrose, Mrs. Frank Sparks and Mrs. A. L. Mai- lery and the host and hostess. Mrs. Hakanson and Mr. Bovlng don are matron and patron re spectively of the local chapter. A social time was enjoyed following the dinner. MARIAN EOES AND DAVID WILLIAMS MARRY YONCALLA, Jan. 31. Word has been received from southern California of the marriage of Miss Marian Edes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Edes of Yoncalla and Pavld C. Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Excelsior Springs, Mo. The wedding took place at Yuma. Ariz., Saturday, January 25. Mr. and Mrs. Wil liams will make their home at Oceanslde, Calif., for the present, where Mr. Williams is with the U. S. army, the engineer depart ment. LEGION AUXILIARY CARD PARTY TO BE LARGE AFFAIR OF FEBRUARY 7 One of the largest benefit card parties of the winter months will be sponsored by the American Le gion auxiliary next Friday even ing, February 7th, at 8 o'clock at the K. of P. hall. Contract bridge, five-hundred and pinochle will be in play with prizes being awarded to high score winners. A door prize will also be given and refreshments will be served. Mrs. George Whar ton and Mrs. L. W. Josse are joint chairmen of the party. Reserva tions for the affair may be made by telephoning either Mrs. Josse at 357-R or Mrs. Broadway at 12-Y. A most cordial Invitation has been extended to the public to en joy the party. EAGLES AUXILIARY HAS INTERESTING MEETING ON TUESDAY EVENING Rachael Evans, Maiy Rich mond, Wlnnlfred Travis and Frances Polk were Initiated Into the Eagles auxiliary Tuesday night by the drill team, wearing full uniform, and the officers of the lodge in formal attire. The ceremony was especially attrac tive and impressive. Ruby Gould reported that the dance held last week at the fa- cllity was well attended by Eagle auxiliary members. The attendance contest has been closed and Clara Stiewig and Helen Rapp were reported to bo captains of the winning teams and will be banqueted by the los ing teams captained by Lillian Hill, Ruby Gould, Clara Frew and Clara Kelly. On February 11 a potluck sup per will be held at 6:30 at the hall. Ladies are asked to bring a covered dish, salads, cake or pie. Plans were made for a Valen tine dance to be held at the hall February 15th with Fern Hob day, Helen Bender. Helen Rapp, Anna Trozelle and Clara Stiewig in charge. Clara Stlewl? reported on the Tnfantlle Paralysis benefit party to be held at the armory and urfed members to attend. A so cial hour followed the meeting and dancing was enjoyed. Miss Florence Allis, entertained a small group of friends at her home In Tenmile Saturday evening. The pleasant evening hours were spent in playing pinochle. High score was held by Frank Albro. PRESIDENT'S BIRTHDAY BALL TO BE SATURDAY The committee from the Na tional Federation of Federal Em ployees which is in charge of the advance ticket sale for the Presi dent's Birthday ball, reports very enthusiastically of the early re sults of the ticket sale. A large crowd is anticipated. The committee also wishes to acknowledge the generous help given by local people and busi ness firms. Lund's Radio shop has donated a sound system for the occasion so that the dancers may hear the music more clearly. Sincere cooperation has been re ceived from all organizations and all indications are that the dance will be a success financially. During 1940 Cost 96,500 Lives CHICAGO, Jan. 31. (AP) The national safety council re ported today that 96,500 persons were killed In accidents in the United States last year. Another 9,100,000 were injured. It estimated the economic loss, including medical expense, prop erty damage, lost wages and the overhead cost of insurance, at $3,500,000,000. He was born In New York state, Jan. 11, 1857, and was married at Woncwac, Wis., August 19, 1877, to Miss Eldah Cook. He came from Reedsburg, Wis., to Oregon In 1907, and moved to Yoncalla In 1921. He followed the trade of blacksmithing throughout his active life. Surviving are nls wife, two daughters, Mrs. Dellah Churchill, Valley Junction, Wis.; Mrs. Ray Tillburg, Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, Andrew Mechler, Cnl- cago, and Edward Mechler, Be lot, Wis., and a sister, Ella Mech ler, Moline, 111.
