HAS ENJOYABLE LUNCHEON MEETING ON THURSDAY ' The Women's Sodiety of Christian Service held a very in teresting one o'clock luncheon meeting -at the Methodist church parlors Thursday with Mrs. Ken neth Ford as hostess chairman, assisted by Mrs. F. H. Churchill, Mrs. Hugh Harrison, Mrs. John M. Raish, Mrs. Harry Lohr, Mrs. Harrie W. Booth and Mrs. Fos ter Butner. The tables were beautifully decorated in a silver and blue motif. Covers were placed for fifty. Mrs. A. J. Geddes, president, conducted the business meeting and also the executive meeting, which was held at the church parlors at 11:30 o'clock. Mrs. Elward Smith conducted the devotions and Mrs. A. J. El lison acted as program chairman and introduced Mrs. Hazel B. Lytle, Douglas county health nurse, who gave a fine talk and showed slides on the subject of T. B. entitled, "Let My People Live." Plans were made to hold an ice cream social at the church the evening of January 30, to which all members and friends are cordially invited to attend. Plans were also made to hold a rummage sale in two weeks. ELEANOR HESSEMER ANNOUNCES ENGAGEMENT TO FLOYD LEWIS The wedding date of Eleanor Hessemcr and Floyd Lewis was , cleverly told Wednesday evening at a meeting of Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. Cards attached to dainty corsages for each mem er of the group disclosed the date as January 25. The wedding is to take place at the home of Miss Hessemer in McMinnville. The sorority group met at the home of Frances Metger on Mill street. At the business session of the meeting, plans were made for a Valentine's Dance on Feb ruary 15, and committees were appointed for decorations and program. An interesting program topic on "People" was led by Alice Gerot, and reports were made by Dora Braughton, Lavola McMil lan, Helen Blodgctt, and Wilma Doyle. Lavola McMillan invited the group to meet at her home on January 22. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess to Dora Braughton, Lavola McMillan, Hel en Saar, Amanda Anderson, Car mel Newland, Alice Gerot, Helen Blodgett, Thelma Smith, Betty Guiley, Wilma Doyle, Jane Bow ker and Eleanor Hessemer. NORTHSIDE SUNSHINE CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING AT WILLIAM FISHER HOME Mrs. William Fisher very graci ously entertained the Northside Sunshine club at her home on Winchester street Thursday af ternoon. Beautiful potted plants were used about the rooms. Birthday gifts were presented to Mrs. N. R. Fisher and Mrs. Hel en Prineen. New officers elected included: president, Mrs. Patter son; vice-president, Miss Eliza beth Paul, and secretary-treasurer, Mrs. D. Kruse. Miss Paul was elected to have charge of select i ing cards to be sent to members ill; Mrs. Clara Steiwlg was ap pointed to have charge of pur chasing gifts and Bernardino Prin een was appointed publicity cor respondent. O. O. F. hall. The refreshment com mittee Includes: Gertrude Ah rend, chairman, Kate Farns worth, Winnie Hawn, Agnes Pitchford, Martha Perry, Ila Lau bach, Mayme Fett and Emily Judd. The decorations will be in charge of Ethel Busenbark, Alice Goff and Lydia Roadman. At approximately 8:30 o'clock the Rebekah lodge and the Phlle tarian lodge will hold joint in stallation of new officers, fol lowed by a social hour and re freshments. DR. DUNN'S BIBLE CLASS TO MEET NEXT MONDAY Dr. R. L. Dunn's non-denominational Bible Study class will meet next Monday evening at 7:45 o'clock at the Douglas hotel din ing hall to take up the study of "Is There to be a Revival of the Roman Empire." The study is based on Daniel 7th chapter and Revelation 13th chapter. These studies are portions of the gen eral topic of "Armageddon." The attendance at the weekly meet ings has been reported as excel lent. All persons interested arc cordially invited to attend. MISS CLARA STANGELAND IS HONORED AT CHARMING SHOWER PARTY THURSDAY Mrs. C. B. Calkins, Mrs. E. G. Cloake and Mrs. Curtis Calkins entertained at a very lovely show er party at the former's home Thursday evening in compliment to Miss Clara Stangeland, who will be married this week-end. Beautiful gifts were presented to Miss Stangeland from Mr. and Mrs. M. Miller, Mrs. S. A. San ford, Mrs. Weber, Mrs. Curtis Calkins, Mrs. E. G. Cloake, Mrs. C. B. The buffet table was covered by a beautiful hand-embroidered cloth, centered with a bowl of jas mine and flanked by tall white tapers in crystal holders. MRS. J. A. WOOD HONORED AT CHARMING TEA FRIDAY GIVEN BY MRS. WIMBERLY Mrs. L. L. Wimberly enter tained at a very charming tea Friday afternoon at her attrac tive home, "Pine Ridge," to com pliment her mother, Mrs. J. A. Wood, who has moved to Rose burg from Orange, California. Guests included members of the Roseburg Rebekah lodge, who were invited to meet Mrs. Wood, who is a member of the Orange, Calif., lodge. Visiting was enjoyed until the tea hour, when Mrs. Wimberly served, lovely refreshments. The table, covered by an exquisite lace cloth, was centered with an oblong bouquet of jasmine and greenery, flartked by six lighted yellow tapers. Mrs. Liston Dar by poured. GEORGE CHURCHILL COMPLIMENTED AT PARTY ON THURSDAY EVE Mrs. A. J. Ellison entertained at a very charming parly in compliment to Mrs. George Churchill Thursday evening at her home on East Cass street. Heather and jasmine carried out a pretty motif for the occasion. A beautiful shower gift was presented to Mrs. Churchill from Mrs. Earl Wiley, Mrs. Dorothy Hunt, Mrs. Paul Geddes, Mrs. R. B. Hampton, Mrs. C. M. Butner, Mrs. E. A. Britton, Mrs. Edwin Booth and Mrs. Ellison. Contract bridge was enjoyed during the pleasant evening hours with Mrs. Wiley winning the high score prize. Mrs. Chur chill and son, Tommy, are visit ing here from Bend, Ore. Following the card play, Mrs. Ellison served a lovely salad sup per. BADOURA CLUB TO MEET AT LUNCHEON TUESDAY The Badoura club, Daughters of the Nile members are request ing at 11:15 o'clock for Happy ed to leave next Tuesday morn valley to enjoy a 12 o'clock noon luncheon at the home of Mrs. Lyle Marsters. Members are re quested to bring scissors and thimbles to be prepared to sew for the Shrine hospital during the afternoon hours. New land. Mrs. George Kohlhagen, char ter member of Roseburg chap ter, will be guest of honor at the affair and three members belong ing to the chapter for over forty years will also be honored. LADY ELKS ENJOY PLEASANT SOCIAL EVENING THURSDAY Mrs. W. F. Harris and Mrs. Kenneth Qulne were joint hos tesses to the Lady Elks at a very pleasant social meeting Thursday evening at the temple. Four ta bles of cards were in play and the higli score prize was award ed to Mrs. Maurice L. Hallmark with Mrs. Adrian Fisher winning the second high score prize. The refreshment table, cover ed by a beautiful lace cloth, was centered with a bowl of yellow jasmine and fern and flanked by tall yellow tapers. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Quine poured. High score for the morning's play was won by Mrs. H. C. Stearns with Mrs. Frank Coen winning second high score. Luncheon was served at noon to Mrs. Coen, captain, Mrs. E. A. Pearson, secretary, Mrs. J. F. Dillard, Mrs. E. B. Van Ness, Mrs. Harris Ellsworth, Mrs. Gene Greene. Mrs. W. E. Ott, Mrs. Ar: thur H. Mountford,. Mrs. J. R. Mount ford, Mrs. W. J. Olmschied, Mrs. O. COMIC OPERETTA TO BE PRESENTED IN ROSEBURG AS SWIMMING POOL BENEFIT When the people of Roseburg attend the comic opera, "Trial by Jury," which is to be produced here in the spring by a local cast, they will be witnessing one of the most popular of the works by Gilbert and Sullivan. The part nership of these two men is an outstanding example of genius. As a dramatist, Gilbert was clever, and as a composer, Sullivan creat ed beauty; but together they sup plemented and complimented each other's abilities to such an extent that their collaborative efforts In humor and music have no equal. Contrary to the works of some writers who achieved immediate success only to "wear out" soon, the operas of these men have en dured in popularity. The sun never sets on a Gilbert and Sul livan show, for they are produc ed all over the world. After per formances were first given by the Savoy opera in England and ev erybody from factory workers and hack drivers to parlimentary speakers, were humming their tunes, there was no stopping their spread. As international copy right laws were not yet adequate to prohibit unscrupulous use or piracy of productions, soon eight theatres in New York alone were giving Gilbert and Sullivan shows before uproarious houses, much to the irritation of the English man ager who had hoped to keep these productions within his own con trol. One reason for the great popu larity of Gilbert and Sullivan is that they never underrated their public's intelligence'.' They dis covered "what the public wanted" long before those words had been turned into catch phrases by small wits who conceive that the pub lic want only inanity. Another important feature of the works Is their rhythmical ele gance. Both words and music have rhythm, not of a vulgar un restrained type, but of refinement and taste along with their humor and animation. Response to rhy thm is an instructive impulse and no one can resist the contagious rhythms of the Gilbert and Sulli van shows. In these days of restlessness and anxiety, the public is thank ful for a pair of artists like Gil bert and Sullivan, whose plays take one of their mattcr-of-faet environment into a fantastic land of mirth and melody. The opera is under the direction of Miss Hclene Robinson and in cludes Roseburg singers donating their time and talents for this ; production to raise money for the swimming pool fund. The Rose burg Kiwanis club, together with TODAY and SUNDAY Showi 1:45 7-9 P. M. the school faculties of this city, are acting as sponsors of the entertainment. BAPTIST WOMEN'S SOCIETY HAS ENJOYABLE LUNCHEON MEETING ON THURSDAY The Roseburg Baptist Women's society met at the church parlors Thursday for a delightful one o'clock luncheon served to twenty-nine ladies and two children by the members of Circle No. 4, who were hostesses. Red Chinese kale, arranged in low bowls, graced the prettily appointed tables. . Mrs. Carl Nlckens presided over the meeting in the absence of the president, Mrs. L. Kohl hagen, Sr. Mrs. George Caskey had charge of the devotions on "Dawning of the Light and Cour age" and taking her text from John 8:12 and Deut. 31:6. Talks were given on China by Mrs. K. W. Anderson, program leader, Mrs. Hugh Whipple, Mrs. R. L. Glle and Mrs. Myrtle Jennings. The next meeting will be Feb ruary fth at the church with Circle No. 1 members as hos tesses at a one o'clock luncheon. Mrs. R- L. I no. tax GEORGE STARMER CAMP CELEBRATES TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY AT BANQUET George Starmer camp No. 19, United Spanish War Veterans celebrated its twenty-fifth anni versary at a large and very de lightful banquet Thursday eve ning at the armory. Out-of-town guests included: Department commander, Judd Stauffer, of Eugene; department auxiliary senior vice-president, Mayme Stauffer, of Eugene, and past department auxiliary presi dent, Mrs. Margaret Rodgers, of Eugene. The tables were beautifully decorated for the occasion In the national colors. After the banquet a joint in stallation of the camp and auxil iary officers was held In the aux iliary hall with past department president, Clara Starmer, acting as installing officer for the aux iliary officers and Department Commander Stauffer installing the camp officers. Short talks were given by Mr. and Mrs. Stauffer, Colonel E. F. Tandy and H. C. Waddell and following adjournment cotree and cake were served. The cake was the gift of the Incoming auxiliary president, . Mrs. Nettie Craig. The next regular meeting will be held at the armory the eve ning of January 23rd.
