MISSIONARY SOCIETY HAS INTERESTING MEETING AT PATTERSON HOME The Missionary Society of the First Presbyterian church held a very Interesting meeting Thurs day afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ed Patterson on South Pine street with Mrs. W. M. Chalmers, Mrs. Ida Bailey and Mrs. W. L. Scott acting as hostesses. Mrs. W. M. Campbell, presi dent, conducted the meeting and reports were given by committees by Mrs. Earl Ullrich, Mrs. C. D. Fies and Mrs. Fred Fisher with Mrs. John E. Runyan presenting the devotions and Mrs. Homer Grow in charge of the .Year Book of Prayer on China. The pro gram, in charge of Mrs. Morris H. Roach, included the study book lesson on "Stand by for China" In charge . of Mrs. W. L. Scott, and a talk on "Stewardship Parables" by Mrs. Roach. The next meeting was an nounced for February 13th to be held at the home of Mrs. Camp bell on South Main street with Mrs. Emma Lenox and Mrs. B. S. Nichols as assisting hostesses. Mrs. Chalmers will have charge of the Year Book of Prayer; Mrs. C. D. Fies will conduct the devo tions, and Mrs. Roach will have charge of the program on "Spirit ual Life." Roll call will be an swered bv members giving their favorite Bible verse. Election of officers will be held and the nomi nating committee includes: Mrs. C. E. Roberts, Mrs. E. R. Metzger and Mrs. W. G. Blake. Mrs. W. M. Chalmers announc ed that a church night potluck supper will be held next Monday evening at 6:30 at the church par lors. Members are vequestd to bring a covered dish and sand wiches. Tho speaker of the ev ening will be Dr. Thompson, of Seattle. She also announced the Ladies Aid meeting for next Thursday, January 1G, at a 1:30 dessert-luncheon at the church. The next executive meeting of the Missionary society was an nounced for two o'clock the after noon of February 5 to be held at the home of Mrs. Fred Fisher. JOB'S DAUGHTERS HOLD FIRST MEETING OF NEW YEAR TUESDAY Roseburg Bethel of Job's Daughters held Its first meeting of the new year Tuesday evening at the Masonic temple with Bette Owen, new honored queen, and her officers in charge. Mary Ellen Darby announced that she was sailing for Honolulu on January 23rd to spend several months visiting her aunt. It was announced that the1 grand guar dian of Oregon, Mrs. Phyllis Poole, of Portland, would visit the Roseburg Bethel on February 251 h. Juanlta Scbern was elected as custodian of lights and Ruth Ann Ruhl is the new chaplain of tho Bethel. February is National Defense month of the American Legion and its auxiliary. National de fense, to the members of the American Legion is no new story. With the actual experience of what an unprepared nation faces still fresh in our minds, even aft er 23 years, the Legion consis tently advocated a strong nation al defense program for the Unit ed States. It seems like Father Time has turned back the clock two decades as we find ourselves honoring the boys who are en listing. These fine young Ameri can citizens are doing just as an earlier generation did doing their part toward the preserva tion of democracy. The situation seems very natural and yet there is this difference: these youths will have training; they will know how to protect themselves in any emergency. The American Legion has decreed this. For the past 20 years they have consist ently advocated selective service. The program to be effective must run along smoothly, without hys teria or undue alarm. This is a challenge to our organization and we have every confidence that we can accept it as we prepare to give every assistance toward the defense of America. Observing National Defense month, Mrs. Victor Micelll gave a stirring talk Tuesday evening over KRNR. Mrs. Mlcclli localiz ed the national defense program, outlining the imperative need of the relocation and broadening of our own Pacific highway as well as auxiliary highways, which feed this thoroughfare. One point made by Mrs. Micelll was a de cided eye-opener. She stated that by the time the first troops of a uniform army division of foot soldiers reached Rice Hill, the end of the movement would be just leaving Portland in Multno mah county which is quite some thing in ineffectual transporta tion. Mrs. Thomas Parkinson, our national defense chtirman intro duced Mrs. Micelll. Umpqua post and auxiliary are looking forward to the date of January 23, when Department President Laura Good and De partment Commander Kelly will visit the Drain post and unit and assist in an impressive Initiation ceremony. A large group from Roseburg plan to attend this meeting, according to Unit Presi dent Mrs. Claude Baker. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. J. A. Harding, the finance committee of Umpqua unit is do ing a grand job. The service shop in the rear of Roy Bellows' store, is open to the public every Sat urday. In addition to this activity, the committee is planning a pub lic card party and food sale later in the month. All funds derived from these various events are used by Umpqua unit to further its hospital, child welfare and community service programs. January is National Legisla tive month in auxiliary activities, Umpqua unit is fortunate in hav ing as local chairman of this im portant committee, Mrs. E. B. Stewart, who is busily planning some publicity along this line later in the month. We believe In keeping all of the bad news until the end. This is membership delinquency time. If dues are not in by the 31st, a member is unfortunately dropped from the membership list. Our fine, energetic little president, Mrs. Claude Baker, will contact any possible delinquent members in the next few weeks. We doubt If any eligible person will allow her membership to lapse. And while we are at it watch our junior auxiliary grow. Under the leadership of Ethel Van Voorst, llvcwlre little president, this group promises to be one ot the most active junior organiza tions in the city.
