E. L. THORNDYKE, Col umbia University psycholo gist, concludes as the result of a nationwide study that: "Ameri can newspapers are impartial journals of world news, regard less of their political affiliations or the size of tho cities in which they are published." That Is wholly true. There is probably not an im portant newspaper in the United States that does not want Britain to win the war, but there is not a legitimate newspaper in this country that will not report as fully and as accurately as obtain able the news of a German vic tory. With all its faults, the Ameri can press is the only press In the world today of which that can be said. The very best epigram of the current season was this one by the president, which drew a mighty cheer yesterday: "Be ware of those who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests." It Is a reminder that we have peace, good food and peaceful work to do, for the chamber of commerce Is a work ing organization. According to the advance no lice of the meeting, a speaker of outstanding ability, lr. Victor P. We will not recite here the accomplishments, leaving that to the formal report itself, but we can say that there has been done much valuable work of a lasting nature. Muring the 12 months jusl ahead the chamber of commerce f;ices not only the usu.il tasks ol such an organization but it will have two additional problems lo struggle with. First and tore- most, the nallonal defense and wartime activities will tend lo more and more take the time and attention of the organisa tion. By "IfAP" APPLEGATE Rested from their recent suc cessful Invasion of northern Cali fornia, the Roseburg Indians buckled down Monday to prac tice for three home conference basketball gamcirin five days. These games, in order, include lYiouioru, I'THiay mgni; uianis Pass, Saturday night, and Ash land next Tuesday night. The Indians have won six out of seven of their preseason clashes, heating Drain, 30 to 10; Roosevelt high of Portland, 26 to 22; Springfield, 50 to 25; alum ni, 30 to 20; Crescent City, 35 to 18; Chlco, 20 to 18. The lone de feat was a 34 to 18 shellacking at Klamath , Falls. The chief weakness shown by the; Indians or late has been in converting free throws, making only two nut of 1!) attempts In the gams at Chlco. Mcdford Team Strong Medlord, Ihe dark horse entry In the district race, has played few practice games, their chief win being a 39-IO-38 decision over North Bend, won by the Pear 1 Pickers because an inexperienced timekeeper allowed loo much time during which Mcdford jlossed the winning basket. All 'indications point to a very strong j. Mcdford team which might pos sibly give the Indians some troll ible in the game here Friday Inight. Grants Pass is stronger this 'year than last season, having re tained most ol its r.MU-'Hi team which split a pair with Roseburg last season. The Cavemen have played belter than .5(H) ball so far this season.
