ROSEBURG, NATIONAL CONTESTS ARE ANNOUNCED BY LEGION AUXILIARY Two national essay contests and a national poster contest for school children have been an nounced by the American Legion auxiliary for l!KIfl. Thousands of young writers and artists in every part of the country are expected to participate, with scholarship and cash prizes rewarding the win ners. The essays and posters will -compete first in local contests nnd the local winners in state con tests. The stato winners will be eligible to compete with winners from other stales for the nation al awards. "Queen Marie of Tloumaula, Am bassador of International Cood Will," is the subject for the VXi'J Fhlac essay contest, designed to interest young Americans in tiie international friendship program of Fidac, the interallied 'Veterans' federation. The contest is open to all students regularly enrolled in high schools or in schools carry ing a high school curriculum. Ks says must not exceed 1,500 words in length nnd must be submitted through the local auxiliary unit. The first prize will be a $200 schol arship. r The national defense essay con test for UK!!!, has two subjects "What Adequate National De fense Means to American Youth," for senior high school students, and "Why Strong National De fense is Kssential to Knduring I'eace," Tor junior high school students. Kssnys are to he be tween 1,200 and 1.500 words in length, and submitted through the local auxiliary unit. The best senior high school essay will bn awarded S150, witli a prize of $75 for the second best. First jun ior high school prize will be $100, 1 and second $50. The national poppy poster con-; test will be conducted by units In : cooperation with school art de partments. Fosters depleting the spirit, and purpose of the auxil iary's memorial poppy program will be drawn and will be dis played in connection with Poppy day, May 27. FAREWELL RECEPTION GIVEN TURNBULL FAMILY ON WEDNESDAY EVENING One of the most charming af-1 fairs of the week was the farewell reception given at the First Bap tist church following prayer ser vice Wednesday evening In honor of Jlev. and Mrs. J. H. Turnbull, who are moving to Portland to re side,. OVT one-hundred members anil friends were present for the enjoyable occasion. The rooms were beautifully dec orated with screens of evergreens decorated with silver, while the buffet table, covered by a lovely lace cloth, carried out a matching silver and green motif by the use ot silvered leaves, berries and ever greens. Mrs. L. Kohlhagen, Sr., Mrs. George Caskey and Mrs. It. C. Giles were In charge and received the guests. Mrs. L. A. Allen-and Mrs. W. C. Tipton poured and Mrs. C. P. Snoddy, Mrs. W. I). Harris and Airs. S. A. Sanford assisted about the rooms and in serving. Clyde Heard, principal of the lioseburg senior high school, very capably acted as master of cere monies for the occasion and gave a very fine talk on the work of Itev. and Mrs, 1 urnbull in connec tion with the Baptist church of this city. Both Hev. and Mrs. Turn bull were also highly complimented lor their efforts in promoting music in the church during their stay here. Mi. Kuigge and Dora bhortridge. On behalf of the World Wide Guild, of which Mrs. Turnbull was advisor, a lovely gift was presented to her from the group.
