The visiting aux iliary members having "their own clubs with them, have been Invit ed to meet with the Lady Golfers nt ten a. m. at the club, and to be guests at a 12:30 o'clock pot luck luncheon. In the afternoon nil visiting auxiliary members have been invited to meet at the club for contract bridge. Prizes will be awarded for both golfing and bridge. Five tnbles of contract bridge were in play during the afternoon with Mrs. Bridges winning the prize for high score. The Lady GolferB will not meet next Thursday, as the Legion vis llors will he guests of the men golf ers nt the clubhouse on that day. 3: ife & hildred Mclaughlin honored by friends . on birthday anniversary V Miss Hildred McLaughlin 'was very pleasantly surprised by a group of friends who called at her home east of Roseburg yesterday ufternoon to' honor her on her birthday anniversary. Lovely gifts were presented and Shirley Shrum presented a pretty birthday coke to Miss McLaugh lin in honor of the occasion. Fred Rober played piano numbers and Frances Sharon Rierdon sang songs. Visiting was enjoyed and at the tea hour lovely refresh ments were served and Miss Mc Laughlin cut the birthday cake. The table was centered by a low bowl of goldenrod. Those enjoying the occasion hon oring Miss McLaughlin included Mrs. D. J. Rierdon and two daugh ters, Miss Patricia and Miss Frances Sharon, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. Howard Church and son, Billy, Mrs. T. S. Shrum and chil dren, Shirley and Kenneth. REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO HOLD MEETINGS IN PORTLAND Attention Is being called to all Pro-America chapters in Oregon to attend the republican nntional committee meetings to be held In Portland, Tuesday, August 11, at which time Chairman John Hamil ton and a party of fourteen will be present. Chairman Hamilton will confer with party officials and workers and all republican candi dates for office. Accompanying Chairman Hamil ton and party will be Mrs. John Hillman, of Colorado, vice-chairwoman of the national committee. The series of conferences will be conducted by Chairman Hamilton and Mrs. Hillman at the Multno mah hotel and a mass meeting will be held In the civic auditorium at 7:!in o'clock In the evening, at which time the Oregon chairmen Vof Pro-America units and various republican organizations are urg ed to be present. Chairman Ham ilton will give his address at 8:30 o'clock, which will be broadcast over kuw. As many members of Douglas unit of Pro-America as possible are being urged to attend this all day and evening republican affair in Portland next Tuesday. Mr. Cramer, who will be gin his first year here this fall, has been an Instructor of the accor dion in Kugene for the past fif teen years, and has been widely known as a fine musician and teacher. Mr. Dallas bail five years at Howe college in Seattle and for three years was in charge of mu sic at the Bend. Ore., high school. At nresent he is studying at Uni versity of Oregon In Kugene and is a member of the Eddie Scrog- glns orchestra. Registration of minus will be conducted at the studio from Sep tember 1 until the 14th. when re gular class work will begin. C. H. AND R. CLUB" MEETS AT BRAND'S FOR SUPPER THURSDAY The C. II. and R. club met at a very enjoyable seven o'clock no- hostess sooner at Brand's on the north Pacific highway Thursday evening. The supper was served at one lurge table, centered by a bou quet of zinnias, and placed in the garden. The members of the Tuesday bridge club met Thursday this week at a delightful 1:30 o'clock dessert-luncheon at the Umpqua Hotel Cofree shop, after which Mrs. Fred Hamilton entertained them at bridge at her home on Blakely street. Recent census survey shows that 10,500,000 women are "gainfully em ployed", nearly one-third the total number of men working. Of this number, about 2,000,000 are classified as clerks, accountants, cashiers or typists. Another 706,000 are employed as saleswomen. BAUM-CHAPMAN ' BREAKFAST IS ENJOYABLE AFFAIR One of the very delightful social aftafrs of the week was given by Mrs. Arthur Bauin und Mrs. W. F. Chapman at their attractive sum mer cabins on the North Umpqua Tuesday, when they entertained a number of friends at a ten' o'clock breakfast. Two long tables, one decorated with howls of nasturtiums and the second with zinnias, were arranged out-of-doors for the breakfast.
