MAY 21. 1930. i Roseburg has the highest freight rates of any city In the western liart of Oregon, according to tin-1 ures compiled by the Eugene chain-1 ber of commerce as a step in Be- i curing a more equitable adjust ment of rates for this section of the state. This condition, which has been in existence for many years, was recently attacked by the West ern traffic sasociatlon, which was organized at Roseburg two years ago, with H Oregon cities alfiliat eil, and adjustments were secured on some commodities, but the gen eral status of rates remains un changed. Roseburg Is paying the highest rates in this region, her figure be ing 1.73J per 100 pounds, or 141 per cent of the port rate. Medford is next high with $1.60 hundred weight, 123 per cent above the port rate; while Cottage Grove In third with $1.48 a hundred-weight, 106 per cent higher than the port rate. Kugeno is fourth. Oregon City pays a first claBS freight rate of 1)41 cents a hun dredweight, 32 per cent higher than the port rate, while Richmond, Cal., which is also 15 miles from its port, pays only 79 cents a hundred weight, a figure only 10 per cent higher than the port rate. Typhoid fever contracted from drinking un . treuted water when treated water was furnished by the employing company was not an accident, says the supreme court. The court made this decision to day, reversing Judge Percy R. Kelly of the circuit court for Ma rion oounty, Blair was employed by O. N, Pierce & Co. in the construction of a bridge across Rogue river at Gold. Hlt. Although the company had arranged for the workmen to get treated water three of them preferred to drink from a hose that brought water direotly from the river. All three became 111 wittj typhoid and Blair died. Judge Kelly ruled that "his con tracting the disease while so em ployed was an accidental injury which arose out of and in the course of his employment." SCIENCE TACKLES "DON'T CARE" GERM OF RAIL WORKERS (Associated Press Leased Wire) CHICAGO, May 20. The task of curing that "what's-the-use" feeling that impairs the efficiency of the Illinois Central railroad, has been undertaken by Dr. James H. Jiut ton endocrinologist. Dr. Hutton, who assumed his duties yesterday, is believed by the railroad to be the first to apply em docrinology to industry, lie be lieves tho efficiency of employes will be increased by the scien tific treatment of thyroid, ad renal, pituitary and oilier glands. "We want all these 60,000 em ployes hitting on all six ylinders," Dr. Hutton explained, "My job Is to remove the carbon to treat the glands that cause sickness and low efficiency."
