Grumbling about taxes has : Seine to be sort of a habit and when we see a huge sum like tlyabove mentioned as the tax for one year, there is a temp-t-Kron to bonnet; riirhl up and hit the ceiling'. Hut, like most everything else, there is a reason for the amount of the levy ' and each and every cent will have its own work to do. If we were living a counple of hundred or so years ago ! wo would have had a real kick coming. The English crown, ' you remember, levied heavy taxes upon the colonies and did 1 not give much in return. In one sense this was a most for- t(Ji!ite circumstance because it directly precipitated the war (fujC indupendence and caused the beginning of our own great -imtion. If the million dollar tax levy, or any part of it, were ."to be used for oilier than our own direct benefit, we "w'iild have a mighty kick coming. As it is, our problem is ;;oifty to see that the money is properly spent for the most good of the most people. 2 Almost one-half or SI72.5-M.47 of the tax money is ..aised for public schools. For the rest of it we have law and .'ojuler, which spells personal safely for all of us; we have good road maintenance and, as important as anything else, we have a going concern, a business organization, manned by capable, people that is looking after the problems that are .common to all of us but about which none of us does any 'lhiig. Under this latter heading comes so many things that olYly our county officers could supply it complete list, and such a list would be entirely too long to print in this column. -' V'hen you come right down to it, we get more actual value per dollar for money we pay In taxes than for any .. oUier dollar that we spend. Through them pass nearly one-half of all the waste products of the body. Since the waste materials of the system, especially those which go through the kidneys, are poisons, it la very necessary that there should be no interruption to tneir passage. In nephritis, or Bright's disease aa It is commonly culled, there is inflammation of the kidneys nn.d their function Is disturbed. The' kidneys cannot take care of the waste products. The chief variety of the food we eat is called protein. For Instance, lean meats and white of egg are proteins. The main waste materials resulting from digestion of the pro teins are nitrogen and nitroeen compounds. These are eliminated largely through the kidneys; iney are me urea, uric acid and ammonia. In checking this disease, there must be re duction of foods rich in nitrogen. At the same time, the patient must so regulate his daily life that he will need the least amount of protein food. This will mean placing a limitation on his daily pnysicai exertion so tnere will not be a de mand for such food. The r'.ief nitrogenous output of the kidneys Is urea.
