TOURIST TRAVEL STATISTICS FKOM time to time during the summer, pessimists have 1 stai-ted the report that Pacific hijfhway tourist busi iiutis had fallen tiff alarmingly, that the coast highway was gelling all the busiress, and that it would only be a short time before our tourist business on the Pacific highway had disappeared. No one has believed these pessimistic reports but we have wondered what the truth about tourist iraffic really is. Hay Conway, public relations director for the Oregon STate Motor association, lias provided accurate and yiter cstjng information based on a survey of all the hotels on all Oregon highways. He asked the hotels three questions as follows : ; (1.) lias l!t2! business shown a CAIN or LOSS over 112X? . (.) Has your Vt'Ji'J outslalu business shown a gain or loas " uver lll-H? " (3.) Has your l!i:! California renlnl ration shown u Rain or - loss over ii)2H'! Z Every hotel except one, along the Pacific higway re j&r.ted a decided gain in business, the month of June aver aging 15 per cent increase over 1928. One hotel reported an increase in out-of-state business of 52 per cent. Iloose vilt highway hotels also showed an encouraging gain. The average gain on the Roosevelt highway was 25 per cent. Good highways stimulate tourist traffic. The improved condition on the coast has caused traffic there to increase but the increase there has not necessarily taken nway the P-acific highway points. No one can predict what will take pTace when the coast road is completed but the figures thus fill- do not show that the coast highway will ruin Pacific lfighway business. ';1 An interesting and unexplainable fact revealed by Ray (jjjmway's survey is that Portland hotels on the average showed a loss of business in June, July and August, 1929, over 1928. .Those hctels reporting in Portland showed an average loss of about 5 per cent for the 1929 season as cfimpared with 1928. o " The average income for persons living in the three Pcific coast slates is 55 pur cent above the national average, lit these throe states there are 500,000 more automobiles UIm families. For these three states per capita savings de posits are 50 per cent higher than the; national average, The standard of living is 05 per cent supernormal. The fig ures are taken from a double-page spread advertisement in a "recent issue of Time, the national news weekly. They give us coasters quite a glow of pride. o Dr. Custav Slrcmann, Gorman minister of foreign affairs, is said lj have died from tl$o effects of overwork. It may well hv believed. His has been a tremendous task, well performed. He has gflided Germany through a critical period of reconstruction with consummate skill. In the fi nal reparations ne;,(..iations he obtained for his country concessions of vast value. Ho lias placed his country on the permanent path of restoration. His place in history is assured.
